Has anyone ever missed a flight due to bad weather conditions?

Hi everyone, I’m due to fly from Gatwick this Thursday but driving there from cornwall (approx 5 hour drive). Currently the weather forecast isn’t looking great due to snow although subject to change. I was just wondering if anyone had ever been in a situation where they couldn’t physically get to the airport and missed their flight. Were you able to get another flight or could you claim money back via your travel insurance? For reference, I’ve booked through Tui and it’s a package holiday to Thailand - they only fly once a week to this destination. Thanks in advance

I missed a connection to the States because my connecting flight in Europe was delayed due to bad weather. I was put up in a hotel by the airline and had to get the next flight 24 hours later (luckily there was one!). Missed my lift in the US though and arrived in the middle of the rehearsal dinner - bit hectic but didn't miss the wedding! I had stayed by the airport the night before to make sure public transport didn't mess up my travel plans but couldn't plan for the weather!

In your situation I would be trying to get there in advance as if the flight isn't cancelled you'd get nothing I don't think.

Agreed, if you haven’t “passed go”, so to speak, by making the airport in time for you originating flight or trip the airline/tour operator will wash their hands of you.

If you’ve checked in for the start of your flight or holiday on time it’s usually a different matter.

Interesting to hear from a pp that some insurers will cover late arrival at the originating airport.

Got stuck in Switzerland once because planes weren't coming to UK. When they eventually were, I got rerouted to Manchester instead of Heathrow then had to get a bus south. I had a breastfed baby at the time, that I had left just about enough milk for (it was a work trip). That was 'fun'.
