4 people in one hotel room

I'm trying to book a night in a hotel near Manchester airport and am baffled to find that the only way for our family of 4 (2 adults, an 8 year old and a 4 year old) to do this seems to be to get a room with 2 double beds. It's sometimes a proper double bed and a double sofa bed on offer, sometimes 2 full double beds. I don't understand how we're supposed to arrange ourselves - I get that there are technically 4 spaces in the beds but who wants it as two doubles rather than a double and two singles?! I had similar problems before booking in Edinburgh and in Germany. AIBU to think that most people booking 4 people in a room would want 1 double and 2 singles instead of 2 doubles or am I missing something?

We always did an adult and a kid and an adult and a kid (tried other way snd too much messing and moaning and no sleep had!!)

Two friends sharing would choose a double double over twins

I would

If you have started a thread about something so trivial, what other worries are going round in your head?

MaddestGranny · 06/01/2025 19:27

I gave up on that "hotel before air departure" thing after a couple of tries.
In my experience, turned out that I/we got less sleep and it cost more than simply booking a taxi to pick us up from home in the middle of the night and drop us at the airport at optimum checking in time.

My twin brother and I shared 2 double beds in a hotel room and with our mum and dad. Mum and I in one bed, dad and brother in the other.

I agree with you OP! Obviously for one night it doesn’t really matter but when planning a slightly longer hotel stay it’s a real pain. My kids are wriggly and HATE sharing a bed. I also don’t want to share with them and very much do want to share with DH. Obv it’s “survivable” but holidays are meant to be nice! I love Legoland hotel setup - 1 double bed in main room, smaller attached compartment for kids with bunks and a trundle. perfect - wish more people offered it (we now have three kids which makes this problem a nightmare!)

We travel abroad a lot and this is almost always the case, America is probably one of the worst for 2 doubles for 4 people. We always books 2 rooms now as there are never enough beds in normal hotels.

In the US, the 2 doubles are usually meant for 2 people. It is just some people want to save money, as we did, by putting 2 children in there as well.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 06/01/2025 22:26

In this situation it sounds OK; if the children are not happy sharing then each of you could share with one of the children. But at that age, you could top and tail them in a double bed and they would hardly be aware of each other.

RedRock41 · 06/01/2025 22:26

Could you and DH not share? Only for 1 night 😉

RareMaker · 06/01/2025 22:29

We stay in holiday inn all the time. Our 2 girls (6 and 8) share the sofa bed, which is a double.

I’ve always wondered what circumstance you’d actually genuinely want two double beds other than an orgy!! My chn are always so cross when we get a hotel room with two doubles. They have to sleep in same bed. My husband won’t even entertain the ide of him sharing one with our son. I’m happy to share to with anyone but we aren’t doing three of us in one bed and husband in his own!

How old is your son and why would his Dad refuse to share a bed with him?

Why? Genuine question. We would absolutely share a double and when we book a house for six usually it's two doubles and two singles. Not an issue. But I couldn't imagine booking a double over two singles

That quote says "double double over twins", not a double over a twin room. I.e. preference for 2 friends sharing would be a room with 2 double beds (like the one OP got) rather than a traditional twin with 2 single beds.

vickylou78 · 07/01/2025 14:35

It's usually two doubles/kings for two adult friends sharing so they can have a double/king each. Tall men wouldn't fit in a single bed - they need the extra length as well as width.

MellersSmellers · 07/01/2025 15:51

No, absolutely would not be bothered with that arrangement. My daughter and son shared a double quite a few times when young. Two singles would be nice but, as you've found out, not often on offer.

Teenagehorrorbag · 07/01/2025 23:09

We've had combinations of two doubles, a double and two singles, and a double and bunk beds. Never an issue really.

When DTs were 10 we went skiing and the double bed was really wobbly and awful - so I made DS sleep with his Dad and I had a single in the kitchen area alongside DD.

Last year in Crete we had a single and a double in the main room (with air con) - and a single in the kitchen with no air con. DH had a streaming cold so we stuck him in the kitchen, I had the single and my 16 year old twins (M/F) had the double. It's just somewhere to sleep at the end of the day......

kennycat · 09/01/2025 22:53

Our Bridal Suite had 2 doubles which opened up an interesting discussion about what a wedding night could be like!

Son is 10 but I'm not sure husband would ever share a bed with anyone other than me. He thinks it's 'weird' and also that he would roll over and crush him. He's obv not bothered that any night of the year he could roll over and crush me!

WHenever one of my parents went away for the night I'd jump at the chance of sleeping in the big bed with the remaining parent. I considered it rather a treat! Weird child I was obv.
