What’s in your dream packed lunch?

User3639305 · 04/01/2025 23:07

I have gestational diabetes and, as a result, haven’t eaten a single refined carbohydrate in over six months. But my sugar-hating little passenger is shortly being evicted by c-section, and I am planning my packed lunch to take to hospital for after s/he is out.

So tell me - if you had the freedom to choose your absolute dream packed lunch, after half a year of self-control and denial, what would you include to ensure it was the packed lunch to end all packed lunches?

Pastrami, mustard mayo and rocket sarnie made with granary bread

Hard boiled eggs

A gratuitous chunk of really rich cheese, like cambazola or vignotte

A packet of Burts beef crisps

Huge slice of homemade treacle tart

Carouselfish · 04/01/2025 23:22

After my csection, in hospital, I ate an entire Jamaican ginger cake. So...that.

hoarahloux · 04/01/2025 23:24

A brie and cranberry white roll wrapped in plastic, purchased at 8:30am from the shop on the corner on my way up to school along with a packet of sweets or a Kerrang magazine, and eaten entirely at room temperature at the back of my Year 12 period 3 English class whenever Mr Mills turned his back.

Seriously. I've been chasing that sandwich for almost 20 years. I ate it every day for two years and have never been able to replicate it.

Ohhh so many delicious suggestions! I’m making a list.

I will cry if I have no appetite after this 😂 though I must admit after my first baby (also a GD pregnancy) was born by emergency c-section I have absolutely no memory of what, if anything, I ate so either it wasn’t a big deal at the time or I wasn’t making long term memories in that moment!

Brie and tomato baguette with crisps.

In your case loads of cake.

Heroic effort, and an excellent choice of cake

Ready salted crisps are the best. I am a purist in this regard.

Prawn and avocado sandwich on multigrain bread with prawn cocktail crisps followed by a really moist carrot cake

‘Gratuitous chunk’ what an absolutely lovely phrase 😂

Sandwich of lots of Sharpham rustic cheese, iceberg lettuce, decent sliced ham and devon fire chutney on wholegrain bread, followed by a gooey cranberry and dark chocolate chip flapjack.

tupperwaretowers · 04/01/2025 23:37

Grated cheese and pickle sandwich in a teacake, equal amounts of cheese, pickle and butter. A juicy peach, 4 finger Kit Kat, bag of ready salted and a flask of tea.

ChimpiestoftheChimps · 04/01/2025 23:38

I wasn't interested in nhs issue food after my c section (I didn't have gdm but after previous emergency premature C section and being kept nil by mouth for 24 hours surrounding it, I was not going to be disappointed in what I ate this time round!).
So I took Coop pumpkin seeded rolls with butter, brie, ham (brunswick smoked 😋), apple and lettuce. They were perfect. And my mum brought in mushroom pasta for my tea (my husband had the v disappointing lentil and bacon soup that I'd ordered off the menu 😂).
Take snacks a plenty - my hospital seems to think it's ok to serve soup and a sandwich at 5pm and then nothing til breakfast 🤯

Oh god the bakery near my mums house used to do the most delicious poppy seed buns with cheese savoury, iceberg and cucumber. That and a packet of Prawn Cocktail Walkers and a can of ice cold cherry Pepsi max.

Ummmm probably pesto pasta with sundried tomato's and lots of cheese. Some berries and some nice choccy.

Heads up, I don't know if this is a me thing but I had no appetite for about 4 weeks after my c section, albeit was an emergency one.

I ate like a horse after my emergency c-sections! I enjoyed the food, which is unusually good at our hospital.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/01/2025 23:53

Chicken Caesar salad with home made dressing, two chicken breasts sprinkled with sea salt and paprika, sliced and fried in butter and home made garlic croutons.

OzCalling · 04/01/2025 23:54

Chicken & bacon Caesar salad. Kissabel apples with caramel to dip them in. Malteaser slice. Salt & vinegar kettle crisps

dizzydizzydizzy · 04/01/2025 23:56

Salmon and mascarpone cheese with cucumber, watercress and avocado on homemade wholemeal.

Cherries

Something very chocolatey

TakeMyLifeAndLetItBe · 05/01/2025 00:06

Mature cheddar cheese and pickle sandwich on homemade bread. Oh and some pickled onions too.
A large wedge of homemade Victoria sponge cake with coffee.
Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries
A big packet of flaming hot Doritos.

CorsicaDreaming · 05/01/2025 00:08

I remember asking my DH to bring an egg mayo sandwich to hospital for me the morning after my DS was born. It was delicious - I ate it all and was then very violently sick! Not great in the middle of visit hour.

Turns out just after giving birth isn't a time to over indulge (even an egg sandwich!)

So maybe give yourself a day or two to recover before eating your faves do you don't end up seeing them twice and never fancying eating them so much again.

A big wedge of homemade cake. A nice piece of fruit and egg & cress sandwiches on soft white bread. Simple tastes, me!

Absolutely this

This is wise advice! I probably need to ease back in gently
