To just want old chocolate back

SideEyeSally · 04/01/2025 20:30

I really rarely eat chocolate these days but thought I'd treat myself over xmas. All the ones I used to love and remember fondly Roses, Dairy Milk, Heroes, Quality Street just tasted greasy and dissapointing. My sister has suggested splashing out on high end Hotel Chocolate next year but I don't want posh chocolate I want cheap chocolate from 20 years ago. I would pay good money to a company that could sell me a perfect dupe of the Dairy Milk I grew up with.

I love a bit of 80% dark chocolate and the Co-op and Sainsbury's own brand bars are delicious, better than Lindt I'd say.

I didn't rate Tony's at all. The chocolate shells (forget the name) are still OK, but the shitty palm oil has ruined most milk chocolate, I agree.

M&S can't be beaten for chocolate, especially the Swiss bars. Yummy!

Aspartame gives me awful 3 day headaches - struggle to find any softc drinks without it even Pepsi has gone to the dark side.

It's truly terrible stuff! I stick to brands like belvoir and bottle green as they are sweetener free but expensive unfortunately so I don't have them often 😞

I got a gift pack of Hotel Chocolat the other day and they were not nice. At all.

My favourites are Leonidas and Neuhaus.

Me too and Anton Berg.

You need to buy the Irish bars of Cadburys. Different shape but still made the original way. Golden crisp, mint crisp, Turkish delight etc. It's amazing and always stock up.
Let me know if you want some sent, it is about 1.50 for a small bar but well worth it.

Ooh this is exciting! How have the escaped the recipe change??

Mirabai · 04/01/2025 23:11

I don’t ever remember Cadburys type chocolate tasting nice. I don’t notice it having got any worse.

Are you sure you haven’t just got used to better quality chocolate? The only high street brand I like is Lindt.

Legendofthelostkeys · 04/01/2025 23:13

My local Asda used to stock the Irish Cadbury bars in their World Foods Aisle. The Tiffin was just amazing. But they haven't stocked it for a few years now 😭

Wishihadanalgorithm · 04/01/2025 23:16

We had a box of M&S chocolates (like a box of Roses) and they were so nice. The orange and strawberry creams that we usually hate were delicious. The fondant had a really fruity centre (jam?) and was less sweet and claggy than roses and QS.

Songlines · 04/01/2025 23:18

Cadbury lost their Royal Warrant a couple of weeks ago, so even the King agrees that their chocolate is crap

I had some after eights as well that were vile!

Guess why they’re vile? Yep, it’s the palm oil!

Nat6999 · 04/01/2025 23:24

I'm down to Milky Bar as it doesn't contain palm oil, which has ruined Cadbury's & Galaxy for me.

Optigan · 04/01/2025 23:24

Ritter Sport is still nice.

Noodlesnotstrudels · 04/01/2025 22:32

Even the Lindt balls are not as nice now as they used to be. I think they are really runny inside? I guess that's palm oil? I was given a bar of Tony's Chocolonely and I thought it was lovely. Really solid and tasty chocolate.

Yes, the Lindor were my favourite chocolates. They switched to using palm oil in them. Sorry to harp on, but it’s horrendous. I tell the kids you might as well eat the orang-utans the deforestation is killing.

Alalalala · 04/01/2025 23:27

YANBU. Cadburys tastes like utter shit. Someone gave us a big tin of cadburys minis and I was shocked at how gross they were. Oily over-sugared stuff. The tin was proudly emblazoned with ‘200 years’ of Cadburys. More like RIP.

Lindt is nice.

BarkPench · 04/01/2025 23:30

My kids prefer jelly sweets, the chocolate manufacturers must have really gone overboard with their cost cutting recipes if they can’t even get primary school kids to want their products

No33 · 04/01/2025 23:30

The quality street and celebrations tubs are still full here. Even with the kids having unfettered access!

Oh it tasted wonderful.Lots of milk and zero greasy palm oil. It was world famous for its taste and quality. But it was quite a while ago now.

I cannot understand how a condition of the sale wasn’t keeping the same recipe. What’s the point otherwise? It might as well be any cheap chocolate in purple wrapping.

GreyBlackBay · 04/01/2025 23:34

The M&S own brand Roses are OK, better than Roses at least.

Aldi chocolate tends to be nice. You have to start reading labels and rejecting oils.

I bought Chococo at Xmas on recommendation from here. Didn't actually check the ingredients but they were very nice.

They still use proper milk

jannier · 04/01/2025 23:37

I've thrown away dairy milk and Thornton's this year they all taste bland, samey and greasy

Twizzlelolly · 04/01/2025 23:38

Yes! Proper milky dairy milk. Someone please bring it back!

It’s all tasteless now.

Posted too soon! They still use whole milk, it's soo much better than UK stuff. The flavours are so much varied as well. You really must try it. Honestly, happy to send you a bar or 2.

LittleMonks11 · 04/01/2025 23:44

Lindt is All You Need

LondonLawyer · 04/01/2025 23:44

Looking at ingredients lists is depressing but informative. Almost all chocolate bars etc contain things that just make it worse - palm oil, soya, emulsifiers, and far, far too much sugar.

Falafelolive · 04/01/2025 23:45

The green and blacks milk chocolate still tastes like proper chocolate in my opinion
