Honestly, apart the odd few most of them are absolutely rubbish! But they seem to be taking over prime time TV 😕

Saturday nights on BBC1 are ridiculous. There's usually 3 on one after another, Pointless, Hit List and Weakest Link.

Does anyone actually watch live TV anymore?

Millions of people do. Lots watch it less, and lots don't watch it at all; but it's still extremely popular. A bit like cash, maybe.

I don't think live TV will last as a concept indefinitely, especially as the older generations leave us; but it's far from dead yet.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 04/01/2025 20:36

Hard agree - i get the impression that like reality tv and comedian-parent travel shows, they're cheap to make

I only like the chase and lingo so I just avoid them

The worst for me was bringing back deal or no deal - like, surely no-one is enjoying it?

See, this is where we're all different: we absolutely love DOND and never miss a single episode.

It would be nice if they ditched the sob-stories and woo ways of 'knowing' or 'influencing' what amounts have been put randomly in the boxes; but the main premise of the show is gripping to us.

Then again, we wouldn't watch Eastenders or Coronation Street or the football - even the big World/European(?) Cup final with England in it - if you paid us. Yet I hear that those are all somewhat popular!

Needmorelego · 04/01/2025 23:35

@Bloom15 ah that makes sense.
I would watch it and think if they needed an answer that the least amount of people gave then why don't they give a completely wrong answer.
But if the answer they give has to actually be a correct answer then I get it now !
😂

If you've ever seen Family Fortunes, it's basically the exact opposite of that... exact the answers can't be so obscure that they aren't technically correct!

Clarinet1 · 05/01/2025 02:55

I have a fairly serious quiz/game show habit - I never miss Pointless, House of Games, University Challenge, Only Connect, Mastermind…..Sometimes The Chase and Tipping Point. I also enjoy Deal or No Deal; The fun is seeing whether people hold their nerve and being glad it’s not you having to take the risk!

FizzyBisto · 05/01/2025 02:57

GingersOwner26 · 04/01/2025 23:47

A lot of my family. They are possibly the only people who watch that Challenge channel that has loads of old repeats. I don’t see the appeal myself tbh.

We love Challenge - it's one of our most-watched channels - we just wish they'd show a greater variety of old gameshows, though, and not always The Chase, which we are getting sick of now.

Then again, there are literally hundreds of other channels that we see in the listings and we wonder who would ever want to watch them!

I guess it's the beauty of the modern day: so many channels and so many options for streaming online. Gone are the days of 3, 4 or 5 TV channels and absolutely nothing else to watch except what you could rent from Blockbuster or your own homemade holiday videos.

There are millions of different programmes/videos available to watch, so it's probably a very good thing if we don't have the slightest interest in most of them, as none of us will ever live long enough to watch more than a tiny fraction of everything that's out there!

Thornybush · 05/01/2025 02:59

Ugh I hate them!

FizzyBisto · 05/01/2025 02:59

Totallybannanas · 05/01/2025 00:13

I like 1% club and the chase, as it's funny and a good brain work out. Some of the ones ok on BBC though are so boring like Tenable and Pointless. Also can't stand question time. I just feel it's over run with game shows.

Wait... Question Time counts as a game show?! As in the one on Thursday night, hosted by Fiona Bruce, where people discuss politics and current affairs?!

IJWMM · 05/01/2025 03:04

Not a fan of most game shows, but really enjoy 1% Club and Limitless Win. Occasionally WWTBAM, but don’t make a point of it, more if it’s on when I turn the TV on.

FizzyBisto · 05/01/2025 03:13

The 1% Club is great - although the 15% question always seems to be suspiciously easier than the few before it.

I just wish they would put the puzzle up on the full screen for the 30 seconds, though, for those of us without giant cinema-style screens at home; rather than squashing it down to a third of the screen. There's plenty of time to focus on the contestants and on Lee, but not during the tiny fraction of the show when the actual puzzles are up!

Yalta · 05/01/2025 04:41

Have you only just noticed?

It is cheap tv. Contestants are free. Add up the hours of programmes where the majority of people making the content aren’t paid. Game shows, fly on the wall documentaries, have been taking over the tv screens for decades

Yeah that makes sense if you thought that. They used to explain it on the show I think. My mum doesn't get it after multiple explanations to be fair!

@FizzyBisto - yeah that is a good explanation. I used to like Family Fortune, but with Les Dennis.

I am good at retaining useless
Information so I think that is why I like quiz shows.

Needmorelego · 05/01/2025 11:40

@Bloom15 it seems so obvious now 😂😂😂
Still so boring to watch. Even with Alexander Armstrong who I quite like.

TeenLifeMum · 05/01/2025 11:46

People watch normal tv rather than streaming?

Haha sorry I meant Mastermind but I guess could be classed as a game show!

CombatLingerie · 05/01/2025 11:50

I am not against game shows as such but I really dislike how many times some of them are repeated. Yes I am looking at you Pointless. I feel like I know some of the contestants personally now and when I recognise them for the umpteenth time I switch off. Same goes for the Celebrity Pointless. An ancient one on last night with sports personalities.

MaltipooMama · 05/01/2025 11:50

Oh no this is the only thing I like on the TV don't take them away! 😂 my partner and I watch the Chase and we LOVE 1% club! He also likes House of Games but I'm not keen on that one. Can we please scrap all the soaps and reality shows instead!?

Needmorelego · 05/01/2025 11:51

@TeenLifeMum if you're over the age of approximately 75 then yes you watch live TV.
A lot of that age group have yet to discover there's more than BBC and "The Other Side".
😂😂😂
(lighthearted......)

I often feel quite outdated but we only ever watch streaming so I kind of forget about the 5 TV channels 😂

Sadcafe · 05/01/2025 12:27

Agree so much, itv one day over Christmas had quiz shows from 2 till 7 then the dreaded soaps, feels like all that’s on tv now is quiz shows , reality tv and soaps no wonder so many people turn to the streaming services

StMarie4me · 05/01/2025 12:42

Well I don't watch any of them, but TV companies are businesses and wouldn't do it if it didn't make them £££.

I don't think MN is the game show audience really. But there are millions of retired or unemployed or disabled or elderly etc people who find them easy watching and keeps their brains active.

Sat evening it's seen as family TV.

BuzzieLittleBee · 05/01/2025 12:50

Richard Osman talked about this on his podcast recently. TV viewing figures have been in sharp decline for some years... except for most of the quiz/game shows. So something like The Chase pulled in over a million viewers every day 10 years ago, and still does now (or even more than it used to). Whereas something like Eastenders/Corrie now only get a fraction of what they did 10 years ago. The game/quiz genre is not going anywhere any time soon!

Needmorelego · 05/01/2025 13:00

@TeenLifeMum gosh there's five channels now. How fancy.
😂😂😂😂😂😂

Ikr! We didn’t get the fifth for years because it clashed with a French channel signal - Folkestone in Kent.

Needmorelego · 05/01/2025 13:05

@TeenLifeMum when Channel 5 began half my town could pick it up, half couldn't 😂
