I’ve just moved into rental. No storage in the house apart from eaves where I’m thinking of storing Christmas things. Found a little dead mouse and lots of mice droppings. I’m scared to move things and find more but I need to use this space.
I swept him up and sang a song for him
there are about 40 tins of paint and an old oil painting. The painting I’ve thrown out too

my question would you be afraid to use this storage space
can I throw some paint away
there’s big rolls of underlays and planks of wood from an old bed frame. Lots of mice poo. If I move it there will be more mice.
what to do? There is no storage cupboard in the whole house

Speak to the landlord. They should deal with mice. Put down some traps in the meantime

Timetodownsize · 04/01/2025 18:36

Definitely put down some traps and ask the landlord to clear the space

Flossflower · 04/01/2025 18:37

As @Guineapiggiesmalls speak to the landlord and put down traps. I would imagine that the tins of paint belong to the landlord and he may not want you to throw them away. You may not be renting the loft too. That needs to be sorted out.

Put down snap traps and check them daily, ask the landlord to sort it out long term, and anything you store in there needs to be in airtight plastic storage boxes.

I've just got two mouse traps from Amazon after finding some mouse poop. Found two beautiful mice this morning who have been released into the woods. Now I feel bad because it's so cold.

I wouldn't get rid of the paint because I'd assume it was for the house for touching up.

Namechangeweds · 04/01/2025 18:41

You’re right it is for the house but it takes up so much space
and yes I love all animals too. Great that you could release yours!

Probably not renting the eaves that’s true
there were mousetraps behind the cooker and there’s one in the bathroom

I don’t think you should throw anything out before asking the landlord.

Traps now , there’s never just one mouse
this winter we have caught 65 !!
yep 65 in the attic chewing through insulation cables etc

Guineapiggiesmalls · 04/01/2025 19:39

Just to say, I had a mouse years ago in an old flat and plugged in one of those high pitched noise emitters. Never saw him again, might be handy to keep your mice away from the living areas!

Flossflower · 06/01/2025 15:10

Don’t get so called humane mouse traps. I think a quick death is much better for the mouse than the slow drawn out one of freezing to death.

BarnacleBeasley · 06/01/2025 15:16

I think I did have one single mouse recently (not much poo, no more issues after we found where it got in and blocked it up) but we expected the worst and got the pest controller in to check. As you're renting it's your landlord's responsibility, but if you want to sort it yourself the local council will probably do it for a fairly modest fee. They will kill them though. Anyway, what I learnt from the pest guy is that you need to dettol all the surfaces as you can see mouse poo but not mouse wee, and they can carry diseases. I wouldn't be storing stuff up there until you're sure all the mice are gone, and I wouldn't want them in the rest of the house either. Finding mouse poo in the toaster crumb tray was a low point.
