Parents who let DC use scooters, Heeleys etc in shops

Cornercandy · 04/01/2025 07:34

Why? It’s bloody dangerous and stupid.

There is a large area where your DC should use these scooters etc - it’s called OUTSIDE!

Was in a shop and security guard asked the mum to get her DS off his scooter. “My boy has rights where and when he uses his scooter!” She yelled.

That is not true. Since when has it been ok to let DC ride scooters etc inside shops? When did you start see this?

I've literally never seen this before. Never seen anyone on heelys, scooters, bikes etc in shops.

Do you not just approach the staff?

MissRoseDurward · 04/01/2025 14:08

I really really hate heelys

Yes, once saw a child on heeleys whizzing round a busy M&S cafe. Lots of elderly people carrying trays of hot drinks.

Do you not just approach the staff?

The point is, one shouldn't have to. Parents should know better. And from the examples on this thread, staff who intervene are likely to be verbally abused. Why should they have to deal with that?

Doodar · 04/01/2025 14:15

In airports too they need to be banned.

Floralnomad · 04/01/2025 14:17

YANBU , there was a family in our local Tesco the other day with what looked like a 3 yr old on a small scooter causing absolute havoc keep bumping into people and all her dad was doing was shouting at her to be careful .

MysteriousUsername · 04/01/2025 14:22

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/01/2025 09:09

YANBU, I was collided with in the Tate Modern yesterday by a small boy and his sister who were squabbling over who got to ride on the scooter.

That said there were also parents who thought it was a good idea to take very young children to see a large Mike Kelley retrospective - despite the clear pre exhibition warning of disturbing themes of abuse, violence and sexual content 🤔

Wtf is this about? I went to the science museum a few years ago and there a bunch of kids on scooters riding around. It was packed as it was half term, so they were getting in the way, knocking into people. Why are parents so bloody useless at telling their kids they can't take scooters in museums, shopping centres etc?

skyeisthelimit · 04/01/2025 14:23

YANBU, shops, cafes, supermarkets etc, should all ban scooters, heelies, roller skates etc due to the parents who allow their DC to do this. It is dangerous and not the place to be doing it. As always, it is down to the parents who have no common sense and don't set any rules. It is a shame that some parents are so ignorant and sadly shop staff can face aggression if they ask them to stop.

My DD5 walks her scooter in shops/cafes, unless it's busy and we carry it

This is annoying too as they often bang it into people.

LondonElle · 04/01/2025 16:18

I kid you not I once saw a "delightful" couple who was stopped by a security guard at a shopping centre for allowing there pre-teen child to ride an ELECTRIC scooter inside pointing to a lady in a mobility scooter and saying how come she is allowed...She has a motorised vehicle!
They were given short thrift luckily! Probably the most entitled and dismissive thing I have ever seen!

Cornercandy · 04/01/2025 16:23

Those parents who pointed out people using the mobility scooters. Obviously have no one in their circle of F&F who are disabled

My father-in-law lost his lower right leg in a motor accident and when you look at him, you can’t tell that he wears a prosthetic leg but obviously being 82 his balance can be off if people bump into him

so please don’t let your kids scoot about shops without thinking about other more vulnerable people

BitOutOfPractice · 04/01/2025 16:36

2 instances of scooter riding that have blown my mind recently:

  • m&s food hall on Christmas Eve.
  • the changing rooms at the gym today (imagine how busy that was on the first weekend in January.

what on earth makes anyone think that’s a good idea?

GreetingCeridwen · 04/01/2025 16:37

They just don't care. It's all about their rights. Mention their responsibilities and they regard it as diabolical oppression. Arseholes who have kids don't stop being arseholes, sadly.

Randomontheinternet25 · 04/01/2025 16:48

@Cornercandy some parents send their kids over to ask if they can have a go on my mobility scooter , this has happened a fair few times. In Wakefield a tween boy told me his parents said I had to give him a go ( I had parked it outside a small shop and walked a small amount of steps) because "I don't need it."
I'm in my 40s it's not a standard 4mph mobility scooter, it's also not a toy or ride on for randoms to play with

wizzywig · 04/01/2025 16:51

Let natural selection occur

battairzeedurgzome · 04/01/2025 16:55

Security staff should be turning away customers with scooters, other than mobility scooters. Leave it in the car or leave it at home.

DisabledDemon · 04/01/2025 16:59

I walk with a stick so if a child on a scooter/heelers runs into me, I'm likely to end up on the floor, quite possibly with something fractured.

I'm giving prior warning to those parents that if this happens, their little darlings are going to learn all sorts of words that they never knew before - and I will take legal action.

ThriveIn2025 · 04/01/2025 17:04

Totally agree. My kids go to a 4 form school, pick up is an absolute nightmare as it is. Every single week in the newsletter parents are asked not to let their kids on scooters. There are posters on the gates. I still spend pick up and drop off trying to dodge the little fuckers scooting through the playground. I wish there was a fine the school could hand out. Pisses me right off! There are always families who think the rules don’t apply to them.

What?! That's batshit crazy. I can't imagine living in the head of a person who thinks that's OK?!

Think someone else mentioned this but these days you're liable to get a smack in the face for your trouble. The presence of (poorly paid) security guards is pretty ineffectual in my experience. I think they only intimidate the kind of people who are decent anyway.

They don’t. People don’t pay enough attention. Yes people got bumped by my kid because they were staring at their phones and not looking. My kid can’t do the watching out for everyone

MissRoseDurward · 04/01/2025 18:12

My DD5 walks her scooter in shops/cafes

It's still taking up space and is a trip hazard. Leave it at home, or in the car if you're driving.

MysteriousUsername · 04/01/2025 18:15

@PeloMom if your kid hasn't got the awareness to be able to see if they're heading into someone then they shouldn't be on a scooter at all.

My kid does. It’s the adults having their nose in their phones and not looking at all

I do too. They should be banned.
