People panicking because of snow

When snow is forecasted in the weather, people go mad, panic buy.

If you are planning to stay at home regardless of the weather, you are not going to eat more as it’s snowing! Maybe 2-4 extra cups of tea or coffee? It doesn’t warrant the need to clear the shelves of tinned soups and UHT milk!

Besides where I live the snow would be melted by mid Sunday and temps are going up to 9c.

These people need to look at themselves as they look soft

Depends where you live. I grew up halfway up a Pennine and there'd be nothing in the supermarkets for a few days as no deliveries, even if you could drive up or down the hillside to get to one. Damn right you go and grab an extra milk.

Needmorelego · 03/01/2025 22:22

It's always about getting extra bread and milk.
They are two things I really can go without if needs be.
Why the obsession with bread and milk?
Edit : if you have toddlers I can maybe see the need for milk.

itsjustbiology · 03/01/2025 22:22

Oh OP ..A million percent have to agree with you! I think yes be prepared by being notified of inclement weather but to listen to the news its going to be the end of the world! Its not, its cold and inconvenient but very short lived,

Runningoutofthyme · 03/01/2025 22:24

eh? Where are you that people are panic buying?
I brought an extra pick of crème eggs on my shop today, but that’s cause im greedy not because im panic buying

ChristmasGrinch24 · 03/01/2025 22:25

Depends where you are.
I'm up north, if the snows bad we don't get deliveries for few days!

You are not going to eat an extra loaf of bread because of the short lived snow.

Some people need a reality check

I grew up above the snow line and we kept extra frozen food in the house all year so we were ready. We never needed to panic buy.

We live in a city now and it is much easier. I love that we can go and buy fresh salad every day and stuff like that. I have spiked shoes too, so that we can walk on ice and that helps.

DeliciousApples · 03/01/2025 22:27

Good to know it's cream egg season today. I was at the shops earlier. Wish I'd thought to look for them!

Didn't stock up anything extra. Although I do need to replenish the freezer! A task I will do at Farmfoods tomorrow.

MauveVelcro · 03/01/2025 22:28

Bloody hell. I nipped down the coop about 8pm for a loaf of bread (as dh and I were having soup)...and there was none, literally not one bread item in the whole place. I thought it was unusual, just thought they must have delivery issues.

Bet it was the incoming snow 😂 I didn't need milk so no idea what that was like, probably all gone too 😂😂

FionnulaTheCooler · 03/01/2025 22:28

I had to go to the shop today anyway so I bought an extra loaf of bread to stick in the freezer just in case. I remember during the "Beast from the East" a few years back there was no fresh bread for a good few days after. There was plenty in the shop though and no evidence of panic buying.

braaaiiins · 03/01/2025 22:29

if it's properly bad and then ices over i might not be safe getting out to the shops for a few days so i might need to have extra in. I'm not doing it in a panic, i'm following a logical course of action for someone who doesn't want to risk being out in adverse weather

You were a panic-buyer.

Pipersouth · 03/01/2025 22:30

Tried to do my normal weekly - Tesco had no potatoes (except finest baby ones) and no carrots at all at 330 and I’ve never seen it so busy. We’re down south and hardly predicted any snow so maybe just post Christmas top up madness maybe?!

Caswallonthefox · 03/01/2025 22:32

I live on the North norfolk coast, so I shall believe it when I see it.
As for panic buying, you might as well shout into the void. People will do what people will do.

HappyHappyy · 03/01/2025 22:32

I don't panic, but have been to the supermarket today simply because we are in the Peak District, and I'd prefer not to drive in snow.

Soft? Or sensible?

DaisyDumplings · 03/01/2025 22:33

We’ve had snow on and off since November and not a few cm. We’ve a good stock of everything food wise and never worry if we’re snowed in. It always makes me laugh when I see people panicking about 2 inches of snow.

Silvertulips · 03/01/2025 22:35

Everyone should have some supplies, but if have kids sandwiches are cheap and so is cereal and it’s better than nothing.

Where we live we rely on boat to bring in food and several weeks there has been storms and no boats.

People are sensible to think ahead and get what they need so they aren’t stuck. Like PP not all deliveries will make the shops. Supermarket home deliveries will be cancelled.

Better than putting a sad face post for food for your kids.

sushibelt · 03/01/2025 22:35

My local Tesco was all out of doughnuts!

FionnulaTheCooler · 03/01/2025 22:35

HotelDuVine · 03/01/2025 22:30

I can assure you there was no panic involved, just sensible preparation just in case. I didn't clear the shelf and as I said, there was plenty and this was in the late afternoon.

Silvertulips · 03/01/2025 22:35

My go to when there’s no bread - let them eat cake!

Im sorry but…. Crème eggs are back in the shops?? Take my money shopkeeper!

Ponderingwindow · 03/01/2025 22:38

Forecast for where I live is 13-19 inches with temperatures of -18 to -15 the subsequent days.

We were out of groceries and on a normal day at least one of us has a meal outside of the house. You better believe we stocked up.

I also have every cell phone, power-bank, and kindle in the house charging.

Will probably all amount to nothing, but what is the harm in getting some groceries. We will eat them.

Solent123 · 03/01/2025 22:38

great now everyone is going to read this thread, the daily mail will pick up on it and all our shops will be without creme eggs due to the national panic buying instigated by @Runningoutofthyme - please post responsibly :-)

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 03/01/2025 22:38

Unless you are in a very urban southern area, 1-2 periods of stay at home weather should be expected through the winter. Knowing this, I keep a good few days of storecupboard food and an extra loaf of bread in the freezer (rotated out after about a month, but immediately replaced). As well as ready made batch cooked meals.

It’s a rare winter when this isn’t useful! If not for weather for those weeks when we pass illnesses around the house.

There is no need to panic buy…

Falafelolive · 03/01/2025 22:38

I'm not concerned about food, I'm more concerned about getting to the airport on Monday for my flight...I'm slap bang in the area they expect to be hit worse
