I had a hysteroscopy yesterday and got diagnosed with grade 2 bladder prolapse.

this was very very surprising news as I have no symptoms. And I’ve had 3 internal exams over the past year (bleeding in between periods) and as many trans vaginal ultrasounds and nothing was mentioned.

is that possible? I’ve looked on the nhs website and it says that prolapses are diagnosed by internal exam- how could this have been missed.

im suspicious because im going private at the moment and this consultant keeps finding new avenues to investigate and now wants to do the mesh surgery for this prolapse and looking it up that is paused from the nhs.

surely 3 previous internal exams one done by the very same consultant it would’ve been mentioned?

Absolutely, diagnosis is now via symptoms. Many GP surgeries have a specialist nurse for this OP. Does the Consultant seem ‘old school?!!’

Not really, he seems pompous and dismissive tbh.

i cant get an appointment with the GP as they only give emergency appointments and this isn’t an emergency.

in fairness to him, he did make a note of all my symptoms and blood tests and hormones and amh and that’s how he was happy to conclude it wasn’t peri.

Do not have prolapse repair if you are asymptomatic. Prolapse repair shouldn't be done just to prevent problems in the future, it doesn't work like that. Don't have a prolapse repair if you intend to have a another pregnancy. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is the first stage of treatment.

Hello! I’m being menopausal with brain fog and can’t see all responses, this may have been said more concisely . You don’t say why you are under gynae and it doesn’t sound like you are having symptoms of prolapse, which may explain it not being diagnosed earlier.

Examination using a speculum can ‘support’ the prolapse hence it not being identified. The mesh hasn’t been used as first line for years however I’m not familiar with upto date gynae guidance for stages of prolapse. From a patient view I would email the Consultant with your questions for clarification. Second opinions are always a reasonable request, are you able to have an NHS referral? There may also be a specialist nurse available to see you .

I’ve mentioned it a few times now, it was bleeding between periods :)

I don’t have an email address for him I don’t think, although saying that it’s probably available online.

i can’t get a drs appointment to write a referral as they only have emergency same day appointments and you have to call at 8am but so many are the phone lines are blocked. You used to be able to turn up physically at 8am but they’ve stopped that now too. So the nhs is out.

the gp at the 8 week check said it wasn’t her job to check me, I’d asked the midwife at 14 day post birth check too, she said there was no sign of anything

On the pompous and dismissive he told me that I have mild adenomyosis, dr who scanned me said the same but very mild and common so wouldn’t cause issues. But then he said because I have that I have endometriosis too BUT he’d previously done an exam and said I don’t, I don’t have the symptoms of it either and when I questioned him on this he backtracked and said I might but if I did it’s mild because I’ve also had a few mris of that area (due to high cal protectin) but he said he didn’t want to do a laparoscopy to diagnose

I’m sorry, as said I’m not able to see all replies apparently although I suspect this is my iPhone ineptness!

By only providing emergency appointments the surgery is not meeting CQC requirements- I would suggest emailing the practice manager to clarify the policy regarding routine and chronic health issue management and in house specialist support. Phone /email and or virtual appointments are options that the majority of surgeries have access to now. This should be information given on the surgery website, or advice on where to seek help or protocol if for some reason they are only seeing emergency appointments.

If there is no option but ED use this is completely inappropriate and needs CQC input . I’m so sorry you’ve been having such a crap time.

Edited

They were already investigated and the partners suspended during an investigation due to patient harm, one lost their license to practice medicine and now they are back but you still can’t get an appointment

all reception staff were got rid of, as was a nurse practitioner who also lost her license. It’s a bit of a shambles.

Oh good lord. Any chance of changing?

I don’t think so, it’s the only one we seem to be in the catchment area for.

id share with you the article about the surgery as it made the local news but the GPs were sitting on referrals, pretending they’d made them when they hadn’t and causing unnecessary delays.

i just looked it up again and basically their actions killed people

My father had mesh for a hernia at 65, he died aged 88 having suffered 23 years of chronic, uncontrollable pain from the mesh, housebound for the most part - the stuff is seriously bad news.

You will be able to access the Consultant via the secretary

I’ve heard countless stories similar to this, which is why I’m so confused this is being recommended to me yet the consultant didn’t want to do a laparoscopy for the endometriosis he said I had (then backtracked) as it was unnecessary medical intervention

Do you have a sexual health clinic locally where you can be seen if you’re really struggling getting a GP appointment?

Franjipanl8r · 04/01/2025 23:43

I would take a step back from thinking “do I need surgery” and just get a 2nd opinion on whether you have a prolapse or not and how to access physio if you do.

I’ve got a referral from a private GP to my insurer for physio just waiting til Monday to see if they’ll cover it

I’ve just got my discharge letter and it says

’2nd degree uterocervical prolapse with large cystocele’

does that mean the cervix is coming out of the vagina? Because it definitely isn’t? Surely surely that would’ve been seen on a physical exam?

also it was literally the day before my period, and I find before my period my cervical position moves down, whereas in ovulation it’s higher same with the luteal phase.
