Pram for running with baby

Hsolley0904 · 03/01/2025 18:03

I have a 4 month old baby and I’m looking to get back into running. Has anyone done this and can recommend a pram that is suitable?

Mountain buggy?

YellowDiamondsInTheSky · 03/01/2025 22:05

I don’t have it myself but just in case someone mention the Hauck Runner, it’s not actually a running buggy, despite its name…

Most running pushchairs are for babies over six months. It's not recommended to run with them before then

That’s good to know! Will probably take me a few months to get the motivation anyway 😂

Out n About nipper with wheel locked or sport. There’s a fb group for them where people often sell them once no longer needed!

running with buggies fb group is great for tips

Happy to be proved wrong but I thought the advice was to wait until they are one before using a running buggy. I think it's to make sure they have enough head control to deal with the bouncing....

starpatch · 04/01/2025 07:17

I would be more worried about your body. Ergonomically it's not great to run with a buggy.

Lavender2021 · 04/01/2025 07:32

Out and about nipper sports (fixed front wheel so it's main job is running) or the mountain buggy terrain (you can fix the front wheel to stop it moving side to side but you could also unlock it for everyday use as well ) . They have hand breaks so you can use it to slow down when running. Some pushchairs that look suitable for running say not to run with them but I guess that's a lack of hand brake(brake on the handle you push the pushchair from) .
Also they need to be bigger. I think 6 months plus then, that depends on the surface you're running on.

standardduck · 04/01/2025 07:33

I have Thule, but you can only use it from 6months. Very happy with it!

Bearbookagainandagain · 04/01/2025 07:38

We have an Out'n'about one, it's quite good once you get used to it. We got it on marketplace.
My husband started using it when baby was about 8 months old. It's perfectly fine to run with a young baby, but we stuck to paved routes for a while to avoid any bumps and shocks.

Personally I wasn't a big fan of running with a buggy. It would have been fine if we had a big park with paved paths near us. But running in the streets is a pain (constantly having to go up and down kerbs, watching for cars etc).
It was better once we could start going on trails and woods.

Mountain buggy terrain. I ran from about 4 months (very gently and slowly on very flat ground). It lies completely flat so there is no slumping or pressure on baby's neck.
Ours is 7years old now and still going strong despite travel, and literally hundreds of kms run over 2 dc and even a few road races. It was an absolute workhorse and worth every dollar.
Also love that it works for taller kids so it doesn't age out as fast. We recently had our tall almost 5yo in it walking home after the new years fireworks.

Lo0opy · 04/01/2025 08:24

Is there anyone who can look after baby whilst you run? I've returned to running after each of my 3 kids, and the mental health benefits of being out solo are wonderful. Also breastfeeding made my muscles a bit too flexible for a while so I used the couch to 5k each time slowly. I breast fed each for two years and ran gentle distances the whole time from when baby was about 6 months, was great! Good luck

I’d wait a couple more months but without a doubt go with an out n about with fixed wheel. I got mine second hand from eBay, they last really well (particularly the older styles). There’s some good FB groups with excellent advice on running buggies that are worth checking out.

SamVimesFavouriteDragon · 04/01/2025 08:30

I have this. I bought it when I had my second baby as I needed a double buggy anyway. I think I walked with it double from the start, ran with it with just small baby from around 6 months. I was cautious and only went on very smooth pavements with her. These days I can run with it double - 2 year old and 5 year old 😂 its a cracking buggy, great on mud and bumpy paths etc. I would have preferred it if it had parent facing options, but in terms of maneuverability, it's awesome.

When you decide on makes you like, try Ebay. There always seem to be bargains on there, often barely used.

Mince3141 · 04/01/2025 09:02

Best bet is to go along to your local parkrun and see what's used there. That'll show you what works locally.

OrangeKettle · 04/01/2025 09:03

baby jogger GT I think it’s called. I went through many running buggies (I think I had 5!) and this was my fave. It was also brilliant as a regular buggy.

Rhinostone · 04/01/2025 09:04

I had the Thule Glide with the fixed wheel. They do a model with a lockable wheel, too, which makes it a good all-rounder, if you don’t gave space for 2 buggies.

Expensive to buy new but I sold it for loads second hand. It’s a lovely buggy - I’m not a great runner but did some park runs etc and it handled wet grass, stony paths etc really well.

SpecduckularlyQuackers · 04/01/2025 09:05

Thule models are fantastic - expensive but great second hand resale value.

ohfook · 04/01/2025 09:36

I got a Jane slalom pro off marketplace and it was fab.

cheddercherry · 04/01/2025 09:52

I thought you had to wait until their neck could take the impact so nearer 1 at least but maybe double check. A word of caution though, maybe borrow one from a friend first to try with baby - my friend paid a lot of money for a pram which baby SCREAMED in as soon as she picked up pace. She never used it for running in the end!

Mince3141 · 04/01/2025 17:55

Thule do an infant sling from 6months so imagine they'd be fine then.
