DS is at the crawling and putting everything in his mouth stage. In the last two days I've had the luck to have been in four different coffee shops/cafes/hotels and I'll always put him down for a crawl about (otherwise he screams blue murder in the pushchair). I do the helicopter mother bit at this stage so he doesn't end up under someone's feet!

Now I can understand the odd wee bit of food that's fallen from a diner's table, but invariably he ends up with his hands and knees absolutely black as if the floor hasn't been cleaned for weeks. AIBU to think that even though the food isn't served on the floor it should at least be clean??

Of course the hands then go in his mouth...mummy rushes over with a babywipe...doesn't always get there in time...bleeee...

Do I need to stop putting him down on the floor?

Or is this how he builds up his immune system?

i don't think it would be safe to put a crawling LO on the floor of a cafe, what about waitresses and such??
didnt they mind?

yes and you are quite right, what were their loos like, that is enough to put me off some places

FAQ · 03/05/2008 09:44

you'd be suprised how disgusting a floor can get that is cleaned every day.

One of my jobs on nightshift at the care home I worked at was to mop the kitchen floor. Now the kitchen was also the route that the staff took to get in/out, laundry was taken out the outside door, but once in the laundry room (other end of the kithen) staff walked back through the kitchen. So like a cafe/eating establishments is was a "well trodden" floor.

The water would be BLACK every single day without fail, even worse in the winter or if it had been raining.

Agree with SBF. I think YABU.

It's dangrous to put crawling child on floor of restaurant/cafe.

charliecat · 03/05/2008 09:47

Stop putting him on the floor in grubby places. Are you not worried someones gonna trip and spill a hot coffee on him?

Psychomum5 · 03/05/2008 09:48

floors are always going to be hidious tho....think of how many people walking about with dirty shoes!!!

and floors are likely to be cleaned each day too for hygiene reasons, altho carpets are less easy obvioously.....they get sticky tho!!!

am thinking that a high chair and a few toys may be easier??

FAQ · 03/05/2008 09:48

also, I wouldn't put my DC on the floor where there are people walking around with hot food/drinks....

SlartyBartFast · 03/05/2008 09:50

my crawling LO spilled hot coffee over herself at a mother's and toddlers..... a stupid parent had put her drink on the floor!!!

Iamthedoctor · 03/05/2008 09:51

I do get a bit irritated also, when bigger kids run around restaurants/cafes. Drives me nuts, in fact!

FAQ · 03/05/2008 09:53

and IME the sooner they get used to having to either sit in the pushchair/in the highchair while you/they are eating the more likely they are to learn to sit still at the table when they are older.....

ViolentFemme · 03/05/2008 10:59

The places were pretty quiet at the time and I was always watching him so I wasn't worried about a hot coffee spill. He just has so much energy and loves to be out exploring so I guess I've indulged him a bit.

The loos were fine. I just expected the floors to be cleaner!

I worked in hotels for years and the floors were swept, mopped and buffed every night- but every night the water would be black. IMO babies shouldn't be crawling on floors in cafes - not hygenic and abit dangerous.

was she ok? i cant stand parents drinking tea/coffee at mothers and toddlers, i know iabu about it as most parents are carefull but there is always the odd few who leave the cups lying around.

my friend says that at her daughters nursery the staff greet the children every morning with a cup of tea in there hands.

SlartyBartFast · 03/05/2008 11:06

thank kerryK. she was fine
the nursery rushed us off to A & E, after soakign her in water, were pretty OTT and the next time we visited, they had set up a special room for the coffee drinking.
at least they learnt from my daughter's mishap.

SlartyBartFast · 03/05/2008 11:06

about your daughter's nursery staff!
