MIL needs a new phone as Whatsapp has been discontinued on her phone model. She is in her 80s and doesn't know how to use the internet, email etc - can anyone recommend a really simple smart phone where she could use whatsapp, camera and maybe learn to
search the net. Thanks

I don't think you can go wrong with an iPhone

Have a look at Doro mobiles which are specifically aimed at the elderly.

Doro phones are easy to make calls on but it took me a long time to help my FIL answer a text on his yesterday. He found a lot of phones difficult to use with arthritic hands.

Oh, you can!
Andriod much simpler and more intuitive!

I've been looking round for my dad who needs a new phone...though unlike your MIL doesn't need WhatsApp and definitely not a smartphone.
Doro phones are the easiest but I think most are still only 2G.
Have a look on Age Concern etc for ideas.

I was thinking of posting the same thread @Grannyinnwaiting

Doro do smartphones but not sure if they're any good. Seem very expensive for poor technology...don't think they do 5g.

I think if she's able to use WhatsApp on her old phone then just get her a low-end model of her existing brand so the controls are similar.

When you help her set it up just go through it simplifying stuff, stripping out irrelevant apps, applying accessibility features, and putting everything in logical places.

I know this seems an odd question for a mobile phone...but are they going to be using it out and about?

If not, they can use a tablet for calls / videos/ WhatsApp. Larger screen.

If not, take them to somewhere with a selection of phones and get them to choose- they are all pretty similar and if they have never used one, they will all be unfamiliar and will need to learn how to use- so best to pick one they like...

When mum was in her 80s she used a large tablet in the house and a simple android phone for calls. I set it up with the minimum of apps.
She did enjoy some games on her tablet such as the finding things games. (June's Journey?)

My DH is early 70's and definitely not very tech minded.

We bought him a Motorola G04 which has proved to be fantastic and so, so easy to use.

I was so impressed I bought one for myself. 😁

I had a Doro previously and I personally think the Motorola is MUCH better and far simpler.
