Cordless vacs that can also be run when plugged in

There was another thread on this topic that kind of petered out, but it seemed like at the time there currently was no such thing as a corded/cordless vac. The problem with cordless is battery life and the lack of a separate charger to charge the battery (assuming you have two batteries), so when the battery runs down you have to stop working and charge it.

Is there a cordless vac that can also be run while plugged in? If not, does anyone know why not?

I used to have a vax with two batteries- one on charge (the charger was a separate plug) and one in the vacuum. Just swapped them out as needed and no stalling on cleaning. Each one had about 40 minutes.

I know you can find cordless electric shavers that will also run while plugged in. Would love something like that in a vacuum. Almost all models have a battery that can't be removed and i haven't seen any that have a separate charger available except one from Dewalt. But it can't be plugged in.

Shark cordless vacs charge their batteries independently of the unit so you can have 2 batteries.

Corded and cordless vacs are engineered differently, so that's why you don't get one that works from both power sources.

It's definitely not the case that 'almost all models have a battery that can't be removed'. Shark are market leader by quite a stretch and Vax also have removable batteries. I'm not sure about Bosch/Miller, but they have a small share in the UK.
I assume you have a Dyson (or maybe GTech), as they need plugging in as a whole unit. It sounds like you'd be better off with a different brand.

My completely adorable Vax Blade 4 has a removable battery. I assumed they all do, now?

Recently I misplaced the charger and had to order a new one. Going onto the website was a revelation - they’ve upgraded the charger options and I think there may be one that can take two batteries. Anyway - you may find it helpful to have a look.

I don’t know about hybrid cord / cordless vacuums, sorry!

(Jeez - don’t mention the Dy..n word in my hearing. I ascribe any future high blood pressure events to the screamingly frustrating odd half hour I’ve spent in the company of those bloody awful machines in other people’s houses. Never Again.)

Thanks for the tips! We have a corded Shark. Recently shopped on Amazon, not the greatest search engine, but my conclusions about availability are based on that. I 'll check Shark more.

Yeah, tried Amazon again and what makes finding one hard is they don't flag things like removable battery so you have to scrutinize the descriptions or even ask a question. Even Shark. Apparently it's not what sells vacs. Did someone say all Sharks have removable batts?

Not finding Vax anywhere. Maybe UK only? I'm in US.

  1. As this is a UK site it’s generally best to state if you’re elsewhere in your OP, so people don’t waste time giving you irrelevant advice.

  2. I’d generally advise buying electrical goods from the source or a reputable store (in the UK maybe John Lewis or Argos, etc) rather than Amazon.

I have a miele cordless with two batteries so can just swop over when it runs out. The batteries can be charged independently too or attached to the cleaner

BuzzieLittleBee · 04/01/2025 12:44

Vax is Hoover in the USA. Not sure if the models are exactly the same though. Shark is also a big brand in the US too.

My Samsung has removable batteries and a seperate charging unit so you can charge one while using another.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2025 13:12

My shark came with 2 batteries and a charging station for them. It's not that great at hoovering though and my ancient corded miele works better

Sorry, Shark has to go on the naughty list. I searched their website for a spare battery for one of their newer models HZ4002 that i was looking at and nothing. They only seem to carry relacement batteries for one of their many models.

Also have to push back on the idea that Amazon is somehow not reputable. Maybe it's different in the UK, but here returns are relatively simple, their return policy is consistent across sellers, and they intercede on behalf of customers when disputes arise. I much prefer to buy from Amazon than direct from companies.

The charging unit on my Tineco has a space for a separate battery at the top as well as charging the battery in the vacuum.

Another demerit for Shark (and for direct websites in general) - no way to email them a question. You have to call.

My new Shark has a 40/45 minute run time , I’m never vacuuming for that long downstairs and I have another vacuum upstairs .

The HZ4002 is corded, not cordless, isn't it?

This is the 1 I got a while ago. Has 2 batteries and a separate charger

Oops you're right. That would explain that!

But tried again with "IP3251 battery" and nothing. Like i said when i search on "spare battery or replacement battery, batts for only one model come up.

Thanks for the image, just what I'm looking for if I can't get corded/cordless, but they (looks like an Amazon page) don't carry it anymore, at least not here in the US. Also doesn't turn up in a search of the Shark website, so it must be discontinued.

The 'UK' in the code of the one in the pic would suggest it's a UK model. Searching by the name might be better.

I have a Shark Detect Pro which does a good job - the 'detect' function means it only goes into boost mode when it detects areas of heavier 'debris' so it makes better use of the battery. Most people overuse the boost which is why batteries run down so quickly.
I don't have 2 batteries, but I could get a spare if I wanted to (I don't, because I don't use it for vaccing the whole house).
