To tempt a carnivore with tofu?

Tofunoo · 02/01/2025 22:47

My DP is a committed carnivore but I’d like to eat more vegan/veggie food without us having to make 2 dinners when I do that. Is there any chance I can tempt him over with something deliciously tofu? I have found 2 nice recipes for tofu chilli and bolognaise but he wasn’t keen. Lots of the tofu recipes I’ve found either are deep fried or full of sugar, so not super healthy. Any ideas?!

YABU-DP will never eat vegan

YANBU- there’s hope

As a meat eater, I am happy to eat things without meat in them but wouldn't want "fake meat".

We often have things like roasted vegetable pasta and goats cheese flan because that's what we are having anyway - they just don't happen to have meat in them!

I'm with the lions on this one...

Try the Ottolenghi confit chickpeas, served with some flatbreads, rice and minutes yogurt.

A million times nicer than tofu and dead easy to make!

Princessfluffy · 03/01/2025 09:35

I love smoked tofu in a stir fry but I think the texture is very love or hate.

ABigBarofChocolate · 03/01/2025 09:35

Tofu is horrible. When I fancy something veggie I go for veggie burgers. If you make them from scratch they are so good. The onion in them makes them smell amazing too when frying so would probably make his mouth water. I sometimes add nuts too. Delicious

Quorn is much nicer than tofu

It makes me unwell. Not for everyone.

Sharptonguedwoman · 03/01/2025 09:46

Just to say committed carnivore here. I’d much prefer something that was obviously vegetarian such as butternut squash curry than something that was pretending to be meat.
I know tofu has been around for ever but is also used as a meat substitute.

You're aware that people have different tastes in food? Also, how tofu tastes has got nothing to do with your moral view of meat eating.

I am aware people have different tastes in food and I’m allowed to express mine. I also never stated I didn’t eat meat.
just that eating dead animals is quite rank.

How exciting, there’s a whole world of new meal opportunities you haven’t tried yet. Not all tofu/vegan cheese/meat alternatives tastes the same. Have a look at the Veganuary website for recipes, follow a few vegan accounts on social media. Veganfooduk on insta promotes newly released vegan alternatives like croissants, chocolate & pizza & will have some suggestions if you ready meals. Japanese & Korean food shops are great for if you want ingredients to go with the tofu, things like ramen soup are delicious. Remember tofu in its original state is flavourless, it’s meant to be seasoned, like you would with meat. Try it lightly battered & deep fried, marinated or silken tofu blended into sauces. Anna Jones has some lovely cook books https://annajones.co.uk/ If you’re in London try any of Alexis Gauthier‘a restaurants which have menus which are both innovative & absolutely delicious.

I don’t like tofu at all.

I do cook regularly with quorn though - the kids don’t even realise it’s not meat.

You could also use paneer in curries.

maddening · 03/01/2025 10:23

I am veggie and have been for 30 years and you could not tempt me with tofu

JennyForeigner · 03/01/2025 10:26

A sort of cassoulet style tomato and bean stew with smoked tofu is an absolute winner

RedPony1 · 03/01/2025 10:46

I don't like beans, mushroom or lentils so i'd be impossible to tempt to be a veggie.

If you don't want to cook two dinners, you surely just tell him what you're cooking that evening and if he doesn't want it, he can sort himself out?

autumn1610 · 03/01/2025 10:49

I found the Sainsbury’s “mince” was a lot more meat like in texture compared to quorn mince.happily swapped out beef mince when I used that for spaghetti bol, chilli etc

SeaShellsSanctuary180 · 03/01/2025 10:52

As an adult you could always leave him to his choices

YABU with tofu, it's gross.

Personally as a meat eater I don't like the fake meat substitutes, the texture always seems off. I'm happy to eat veggie meals but just make them veggie, don't put fake meat in it.

Completely agree!

OnceMoreWithAttitude · 03/01/2025 10:59

Remember tofu in its original state is flavourless,

But it isn’t .

The responses of some pp on this thread are exactly what earn vegan zealots the stereotypes.

Some people whether omnivore, veggie or vegan do not like tofu.

We are not ‘unimaginative’, we are not thick, or cookery numpties, we have tried it in all sorts of forms, recipes and contexts.

Telling us it is an ‘acquired’ taste assumes it’s just a matter of us changing our minds and acquiring the same taste as you.

It is a legitimate food response to not like tofu. You are not running a cult, you don’t have to try and sign us up as tofu worshippers.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/01/2025 11:01

You’re not going to win anyone over with tofu.

Start him off with a veggie lasagna or fried rice.

KhakiShaker · 03/01/2025 11:01

You’re never going to tempt a meat eater with tofu. If he likes meat then any veggie replacement is going to be a disappointment.

im veggie and personally prefer to use lentils rather than the weird substitutes.

Oh, and apologies if already mentioned, but you could try 'egg fried rice' Crumple tofu up in the pan and fry in a little oil with turmeric for colour, salt, pepper and a little plant milk. That's your egg. Mix with rice and spring onion, mushroom and pepper and cashews. I think it makes good scrambled egg, but tbf I may have forgotten the real thing!

Yum! I was wondering what to have for dinner tonight and might do something like this.

whensmynexthol1day · 03/01/2025 11:16

Paneer is lovely in curries and has a great texture and plenty of protein!
I keep meaning to make some as our local takeaway does the most amazing paneer which must be homemade but the stuff you buy in supermarkets is perfectly acceptable.

My favourite is pea and paneer in a creamy sauce.

Ooh yes my local Indian does a fabulous paneer chilli masala.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/01/2025 11:25

My dd makes a curry with halloumi instead of paneer though that's probably too salty for my taste.
