4 Year old has Hives

My 4 year old son has been getting hives for the past 4 days.
They come and go and I’ve been putting cream on them and giving him allergy medicine. My husband and I think it’s from the detergent I bought but I stopped using it as soon as he broke out. I’ve also rewashed all of his clothes and our clothes so much I actually broke our dryer from the constant running. I used dye free and fragrance free arms, and hammers powder to rewash everything. But he is still breaking out. On his face, back and legs. Anyone else have this happen? I’m exhausted from doing so much laundry and trying to figure out what is the problem. He usually has a big break out when he is falling asleep. He has no fever. They itch like crazy and I feel so bad for him. We have messaged his doctor but she didn’t really say much. We plan on calling her in the morning as he broke out again tonight. But I feel like I’m going crazy trying to get the hives to stop. Please help a momma out, anyone have any ideas why the hives are continuing to pop up?

My child gets hives when they have a virus.

Roundlikeacircleinaspiral · 02/01/2025 03:24

Not always with a fever. It could be that your child is sickening for something?

Thismombear · 02/01/2025 03:27

What do you mean by sickening?
he had a small cold before Christmas but he hasn’t so much as coughed or even had a fever these past 4 days.

If it's still happening then maybe it's something he's eating

Yes mine too and they are always worse in the morning as she has gotten warm during the night under her duvet. Today she woke up with bright red cheeks and hives on her chest, they started to go down as she cooled down

He's had no new foods, no new drinks, we stick to a regular diet. He drinks water and milk, no soda barely any juice. We do a PediaSure chocolate shake in the morning, but we've done that for a while now. He really only likes to eat the same things. Hates to try new foods, so I don't really make him try anything different.

Piriton?

Ikeameatballs · 02/01/2025 06:49

Could be viral urticaria.

Sickening means that an illness is on it's way/at the early stages of illness/not yet an obvious presentation of illness but they're coming down with something.

RegulatorsMountUp · 02/01/2025 12:04

Probably the 'small cold' was actually covid or some other virus and its now presenting like this. I'd keep treating with Piriton etc and they'll soon go.

Roundlikeacircleinaspiral · 02/01/2025 12:04

My child starts with hives on the legs in the morning and, by the end of the day, is covered in them.

When they were 4, their face used to be so covered that it would look swollen.

They'd get a night's sleep and most of it would be gone except for small patches on the legs and then it would start again.

It would last for about a week. When these started, we eventually realised that it meant it was the beginnings of a viral illness.

Thismombear · 03/01/2025 06:11

We are doing allergy medicine, they seemed to have slowed down but are still showing up when he is sleeping on his cheeks.

No personal experience of this but a colleague of mine experienced a similar thing and went on a low histamine diet which resolved it. Certain foods are high in histamine and can build up in your body, tomatoes are one of them. You could google that and give it a go?

My child gets hives when they have a virus.

When I got COVID, the only symptom I had was hives. I wouldn't have even tested except that my son had the typical flu symptoms and had tested positive.

SofiaAmes · 03/01/2025 06:56

I would get hives every time I had a cold through my entire childhood...and then it resurfaced in perimenopause. Claritin or Zyrtec and lots of rest. My dd got the same thing when she was young.

He usually has a big break out when he is falling asleep. Have you rewashed the bed sheets as well as his clothes? Any air fresheners or scented items used around the bedroom area, or the bathroom he uses before bed?

Morph22010 · 03/01/2025 07:23

I get if I use quick wash on washing machine so I don’t use it anymore, took me a while to figure out what issue was. My dh is allergic to Persil

Yes, I have rewashed everything multiple times, always normal wash with extra rinse. We are now using arms and hammers dye free and fragrance free powder.
He is still getting them just at night when he is sleeping it seems. We did take him into docs today and all she said was that his ears and lymph nodes do look a little swollen, and to keep doing what I'm doing and if they last for another week to bring him back him so they can do testing.

I haven't used any fragrances sprays or plug ins in his bedroom. Or other areas, for his bath I use a dye free and fragrance free baby shampoo & body wash. I'll test for Covid tomorrow and see what it comes up as, my husband and I have had Covid before and had symptoms but we don't have any right now or before Christmas when he had his small cough.
