Why do people eat/put make up on when they record a TikTok

I’m really showing my age here and I’m very aware of it but I still don’t get it. I don’t understand why in a lot of TikToks people are talking while eating, have a plate of food out in front of them, are putting foundation on lol! Can someone tell me why? I also find it really irritating especially the eating and slapping food in between sentences.
god I feel old.

And the food and/or make up has no relevance to what they are talking about!

No one really understands, but significantly more viewers watch than if they're 'just' chatting. I think because your eyes are kept occupied as well as your ears, you're less likely to scroll on.

I was thinking this just this morning.
I had tried to watch a video on something that was interesting me but I had to scroll by after watching her badly apply makeup whilst talking. If I wanted to watch makeup being done I search for tutorials!

its the visual of tiktok. I’m not really sure what answer you could be looking for here 😂 possibly it’s to hit both people who like eating videos and people who like make up videos? People like watching others do monotonous things.

i think maybe what you don’t get is that TikTok isn’t like a ted talk where the video needs to have value- videos are designed to get pushed up the algorithm and get views/ follows. Not to have a logic

Aren’t they called Get Ready With Me (GRWM)? I end up zoning out of the story as I’m totally distracted my the make up and hair prep they’re doing. Although I think I struggle to focus on more than one thing at a time these days

They’re not get ready with me videos! It’s like they’re talking about a relationship or life things whilst eating a sandwich from Tesco in their car!

It’s quite a subtle marketing technique. If you watch a tv ad there are only a few seconds between each change of camera angle, or even change of scene. This is now being replicated on tik tok and insta…the GRWM videos are a good example of this.

The make up and eating ones may not change the camera angle but the constant movement does a similar thing by keeping the viewer (almost subconsciously) invested in seeing what will happen next. And length of time videos get watched dictates how much effort the almighty algorithm puts in to pushing that particular vid to more people. And on and on.

However, you may find the eating and making up ones start to change or disappear as, apparently, the trend for ‘showing your face’ isn’t working quite as well to get the reach as it used to. The very frequent change of camera angle videos seem to be on the rise now.

There’s a lot more to it (music, video quality, and much else that I’m unaware of!) but it’s quite fun (I am truly sad) to find accounts with not many posts but thousands and thousands of followers and really study what they’re doing.

Happy scrolling!
