Advice Needed: Symptoms After Taking Codral Cold and Flu Tablets for 30 years old women -

Hi Team,

I am taking Codral Cold and Flu Mucus Relief tablets over the past three days. Here’s my dosage history:

29th: Took one tablet.
30th: Took two tablets at once, as per the instructions on the box.
31st: Took one tablet

I did not take any tablets today. However, whenever I took the medication, I experienced the following symptoms:
My body felt very warm and sweaty.
I had to pass stools shortly afterward.

Due to these reactions, I decided to stop taking the tablets today. However, i have noticed two concerning symptoms:
A sudden pressing sensation in the abdomen below the ribs (stomach area) a couple of times today.

Blood in my urine twice (urine appears pink with visible blood marks) today .

We suspect it could be a urinary tract infection. When I contacted Medicare customer support, they strongly advised visiting a doctor immediately within the next 12 hours.

While I understand the urgency, I don’t believe this is an emergency and think it could be a generic issue. I am also concerned that starting antibiotics based solely on these symptoms (blood in the urine in the past 4 hours and abdominal pressure) might not be ideal.

Could anyone provide more clarity or advice on this situation?

I am not on any other medications. Can you please tell me if it is common?

Thank you,

Pissing blood is usually a UTI.

See a pharmacist association before it gets worse, they can prescribe for you (or her) in England and Wales without you seeing a GP.

I love in Australia and I don't think we have a pharmacy association

Sorry, that was a typo - it should have read pharmacist (phone has a mind of its own at times).

So see a GP or out of hours doctor or go to a walk in centre - anywhere you can be seen by a medical person with the ability to dip test your (or her) urine and prescribe antibiotics if required.

Blood in your urine should always be investigated. Contact your GP or whoever would deal with out of hours medical issues.

Thank you,

I’ve had the exact same thing (minus the cold/flu meds) for the last week (the pinkish bloody pee was only for the first day), it’s got better but still lurking around. I didn’t go to the doctors but went to the pharmacy yesterday (7 days after symptoms first started), they gave me a milder 3 day course of antibiotics called nitrofaurantoin to be increased to something stronger (Clarithromycin) if symptoms don’t improve after the first meds)

I hate taking antibiotics too if it will just clear up on its own but as this was a week so far I thought I’d better take something.

If it gets any worse you could end up with kidney infection so definitely best to see a GP now and start antibiotics if advised.

JustJoinedRightNow · 01/01/2025 09:12

@Saeman I'm in Australia too. Go to a medical centre tomorrow and ask the dr for advice. They can easily do a urine test to check for a uti and get you onto antibiotics if it is.

Just to clarify symptoms have been needing the toilet urgently and in the night, pain when using the toilet, blood on the first day and itchiness but not feeling faint, not much abdominal pain between toilet trips and no other symptoms.

I had my first uti in over 10 years start on Xmas eve. We have some decent urine testing strips (DH has a couple of conditions they help him monitor) so I used one of those - even though symptoms weren't yet that bad it showed high white blood cells and a trace of blood. Rang gp who said go straight to the pharmacist, got a short course of antibiotics with no further ado.

I reckon having test strips in the house is quite a good idea if you’re at all prone to UTIs, saves guesswork.

I hate taking antibiotics too if it will just clear up on its own but as this was a week so far I thought I’d better take something.

I don't think there's really much point waiting and seeing when you've got evidence of a uti, which might possibly get better but can get a lot worse and miserable anyway. While obviously it's a very bad idea to take ABs gratuitously, in the case of utis (a) it's easy to test for some sort of bacterial infection and (b) nitrofaurantoin is very specific - apparently it rapidly filters out of the blood into your urine. Surely better to nip the infection in the bud with this than to reduce the likelihood of needing a stronger unspecific ab like Clarithromycin to clear it up?

Oh interesting thank you!! I will definitely get the test strips s as bd take the antibiotics earlier next time.

Do not take the advice of random, unqualified people on mumsnet over the advice of a medical professional. Speak to a doctor. They will only prescribe antibiotics if they think they are necessary. If it is a UTI you need treatment as soon as possible because of how quickly they can become serious.

Pandasnacks · 02/01/2025 07:49

Blood in urine is never a ‘generic issue’ it needs medical advice and treatment
