To think my mum bought my son a fake football strip? Pic attached

My 7yo son is Ronaldo mad and a AI Nassr kit was on his list to Santa. My mum insisted on buying it as it met her budget. He loved it on Xmas day and was very grateful and I’ve only just washed it yesterday. I washed it at 30 degrees, which is much cooler than I’ve washed his other kits before when he’s played matches. However the blue colouring on the lettering has disappeared completely on the back! Pic attached - AIBU to think she’s bought him a fake kit? He’s always had football kits as presents and this has never happened. I’ve got in touch with her to ask her where it came from to see if I can return it. She said she bought it in a sports shop in France and can’t return it as she bought it in November.

For context, she is SUPER tight. She will come stay with me for a whole week, eating food I’ve paid for (which is fine, she’s a guest) but will then want the 49p for the pint of milk I’ve asked her to get for me when she’s at the shop. She’s very much a penny pincher. For clarity she isn’t poor - she retired at 48 and has been mortgage free since 40 (she’s 65 now).

Even though she knows my strong feelings on counterfeit goods and I didn’t think she’d get her grandson a fake kit but I just have a gut feeling!

If you Google lens it could you check?
Or ask your mum for the receipt to "exchange" it apologies I missed the night it France bit .
I know ppl who've bought 'replica' shirts from tiktok shop. To me replica is counterfeit
I know nothing about football or tiktok shop though!

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 31/12/2024 17:41

Possible though I've had Forest kits (that I know are 100% genuine) that washed shockingly.

roses2 · 31/12/2024 17:42

Quality of clothes has gone downhill so I wouldn’t assume it’s fake.

do the labels look genuine?

Jeeeeez · 31/12/2024 17:44

I was told not to use fabric softener by the official shop when I bought genuine kits abroad for my DC as it ruins the name and number apparently. Maybe she did buy fake kits, I’ve never had a problem with the cheap kits I’ve bought from eBay.

MyCatsAreFuckwits · 31/12/2024 17:44

Yeah, probably a knock off.
That is the adhesive that has been left behind.
I have had a logo come off an official kit....it was 8 years old though and had been washed 100's of times.

Paradoes · 31/12/2024 17:45

It’s fake I think

she has a cheek to ask for 49p

Birdscratch · 31/12/2024 17:47

The shape of the N is different on this

*bought in France sorry combination of autocorrect & new glasses

Spirallingdownwards · 31/12/2024 17:49

Did you wash it inside out? Does it matter if she bought him a replica anyway?

Birdscratch · 31/12/2024 17:51

It matters if the dye has run on the first wash.

Rocksaltrita · 31/12/2024 17:55

Looks fake to me. Such a mean thing to do as kids can spot fakes a mile off. Imagine if he’d done to see his mates, all proud of it, and they’d taken the piss?

cheesychipsontheoche · 31/12/2024 17:57

Yeah that looks fake. There are loads of decent replicas out there but you have to know what to look for.

arinya · 31/12/2024 17:58

The “official” kits are outrageously expensive, especially for children who will outgrow. But yes that is a fake. I’d say it is a cheaper fake though. There is some better quality replica out there. DH has some “replica” gear from DHgate which looks EXACTLY like the real thing, you can’t tell the difference between the real kit he has and the fake one, all the tags and logos are the same and it all washes the same. Ethical, no, but the exact same quality, yes.

PatriciaHolm · 31/12/2024 17:59

Birdscratch · 31/12/2024 17:47

That's the 24/25 kit - 23/24 looked like the OPs.

Crazybaby123 · 31/12/2024 18:01

I was in madrid recently and went to the real madrid shop, the shirts ars super high quality and really expensive, i also went in some local shops and also saw stalls on the road selling exact replicas for a third of the price still expensive for a t shirt. So its probably fake but she might not be aware that it was a fake if the guy said it was real! Assuming france has the same types of fake shops that madrid does.

Birdscratch · 31/12/2024 18:03

Ah. Then you’ll only know if you ask for the receipt to exchange it OP.

JimHalpertsWife · 31/12/2024 18:03

It being a fake wouldn't bother me - he is 7, they don't need "genuine" football tops. However the fact that it's washed out after 1 wash means it's dreadful regardless. Ask for the receipt to exchange.

Allthenameshavegone1972 · 31/12/2024 18:04

I don't think it's tight to buy replica if you get good quality. The real thing is outrageously expensive, especially for kids who'll outgrow the clothes in no time. It has to be good quality & an exact match though

Hoplolly · 31/12/2024 18:20

Possibly. Though we only buy fake kits as the prices are absolutely ridiculous - however we have a good supplier and the kids don't care.

mmgirish · 31/12/2024 18:33

That's definitely fake. My son has a real one and the back doesn't look like that.

spuddy4 · 31/12/2024 18:35

The best kits my kids ever had were fakes from the looky looky men. They washed and tumble dried far better than the real kits, the numbers and letters peeled from the genuine ones but they stayed in tact on the fakes.

AllTheChaos · 31/12/2024 19:07

I would be tempted to ask for the reciept anyway, and say it’s so you can contact the shop to complain that the item wasn’t fit for purpose. In Europe like the UK you can get a refund on that basis despite it having been purchased in November. Then when she can’t produce a receipt from a shop licensed to sell the kit you can explain that the trouble with knock offs is they can’t be washed, and had she told you that’s what she had bought you could have them bought him the real thing. As it is he’s been given something unusable and will be so terribly disappointed. I wouldn’t normally advocate being so blunt with someone, but in this case her meanness will negatively affect your young child, which isn’t ok.

Onabench · 31/12/2024 19:09

I've only had this happen with fake kits, so I'd be suspicious OP

brbg2g · 31/12/2024 19:11

Yes definitely fake

brbg2g · 31/12/2024 19:13

Check Soccerlord for a replacement. They come from Sweden so take a few weeks but are very good quality. Unsure if real or not but my dh bought our kids kits which have been washed as normal with other clothes and look brand new. They do look very real if they aren't.
