Especially when they know some group members hold diametrically opposed views.

Are they tone deaf or on a wind up?

They think it’s like the old days where people are presented with facts and can find a middle ground. They don’t realise that both sides of the fence are being fed different facts and it will only lead to conflict

Well back before we all sat around typing shit into screens, we talked shit in the pub face to face. Often within groups that had significant differences of opinion. We were quite able to manage this, somehow.

Didntseeyouthere · 31/12/2024 16:02

Where do you mean?

Surely sm is for sharing how you feel / think with people? If you only have people sharing the same stuff (good or bad) you'll end up with an echo chamber? Although saying that, if you have one different view in a large group, they'll get shouted down.

Who's to say their view are the wrong ones?

XWKD · 31/12/2024 16:09

I have a few old friends and cousins who are into conspiracy theory bullshit and that's all they post about. It's fucking annoying. I used to be able to unfollow them without unfriending them on Facebook.

Do the group rules forbid political discussion?
Are there active moderators keeping the group on topic?
Do you know how the Report To Admin button works?

It's a WhatsApp group of friends. Nothing to do with politics. Also people who are likely to get the hump if you present an opposing viewpoint.

It's bad enough on here but at least I can choose not to click on political threads.

WhatsApp counts as SM now?

Well pretty much of every thing has to do with politics one way or another. Do you not appreciate people who have opposing views?

Grown ups used to discuss their diffrences, now it seems particular groups just want to shut down opposing views or things they dont like.

Tell them your group isn't discussing politics, money, or religion. If they've been brought up properly, they will understand.

Thepeopleversuswork · 31/12/2024 19:08

It depends. I don’t think there’s anything fundamentally wrong with people talking about politics. Politics is important. It’s healthy to be able to discuss it in a respectful fashion without worrying that you are upsetting someone.

But if it’s being done in a goady way to wind up people known to have opposing views for the sake of it it’s inappropriate and bad mannered.

ShortyShorts · 31/12/2024 19:08

Sounds a bit annoying.

Why don't you leave or mute the group?
