To not start detox while there is still Christmas food

Need to loose weight - still have about 4 days worth of Christmas food left to finish. Meats, cheeses, party food bits, dips, chocolates. Chocolates would keep until end of Feb but I think it makes sense to finish off now then start, anyone else in same boat ?

Freeze some and use in the future, I made a cheese sauce for lasagna with leftover Christmas cheese, froze turkey and ham, made and froze soup. Treats keep for guests and Pantone etc has BBF May/June.
Expensive December is a sunk cost, scoffing it all ain’t help.

Bigblueelephant · 31/12/2024 20:29

I keep it all and treat myself to a little something (a mince pie or a few Celebrations for example) every day after dinner. I still lose the weight and having the little treats stops me feeling deprived.

bakewellbride · 31/12/2024 20:30

@Cherrysoup well done on your achievement. I gain weight easily so try to keep on top of things. Inhaled a dominoes the other night so far from perfect but overall I try to be sensible. Intermittent fasting twice a week and restricting chocolate to Sundays only seems to work for me.

You've already spent the money on the food, it makes no difference whether you eat it or throw it.

I realised this last year that I didn’t have to stuff all the food that was left. If nobody else wanted it, it went in the bin. I’ve kept this attitude throughout the year to take away the guilt around leaving food.

Don’t take that as a righteous post! I still have lots of weight to lose 😬😄

You must earn too much if you regularly throw away food. So wasteful!

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/12/2024 20:31

You're not a dustbin for unwanted food.

But my colleagues are... Grin They demolished the Ferraro Roche in about 20 minutes.

DontshootmyRaptors · 31/12/2024 21:18

How about a chocolate and cheese fondue to dip all your left over snacks in, should put you off eating for at least the whole of Jan.

DontshootmyRaptors · 31/12/2024 21:22

I can never go cold turkey on the left over treats. The unopened snacks will be left in the larder until whenever. The cheese is put into some kind of bake or lasagne makes no difference if it’s got fruit in or not and the choclates get picked off slowly through Jan to keep the winter blues away.

yummyscummymummy01 · 31/12/2024 21:26

I never start New Year's resolutions on the 1st. I'm still off work and on holiday. All New Year's resolutions start on my first day back in the office.

TwinkleLights24 · 31/12/2024 21:26

Our cupboards are full of snacks and chocolate but I see no need to eat them up or get rid of them. They have months left on the use by date and were restrained enough not to binge on it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/12/2024 22:48

@iamnotalemon it's wasteful as fat as well. Whether in the bin or on my arse, it isn't needed.

I'd take it to work. But there are shelters, women's refuges, churches, food banks. And your own freezer.

Definitely do this with the leftover chocolates/biscuits/cake if you can’t bring yourself to chuck them.

Zanatdy · 01/01/2025 08:49

Yeah no point starting today if you’ve got food to eat! I always like to start on a Monday too. I have too many chocs though to eat all before Monday, so i’m going to take mine to work (if anyone can face more chocolate) and tell the kids to hide theirs! I lost 9lbs in Sep-Nov ready for December and reckon i’ve gained most of it back, but reckon some of it will easily fall off. Once i’m in the swing of it i’m fine but first week will be painful.

AhBiscuits · 01/01/2025 08:57

I'm cooking a full Christmas dinner today because I got a cheap as chips turkey crown at the supermarket and the Christmas dinner we had at inlaws was massively disappointing 😄 Monday 6th is the end of Christmas for us.

achangeofusername · 01/01/2025 09:04

We always ease our way in to January. Freeze some, and mix some with healthy food - eg broccoli and Stilton soup. Party food we've learned to buy frozen through the years and we're often eating it well into the summer!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/01/2025 09:11

'Detoxing' isn't really a thing imo. What matters is habit. What you do/eat day to day over a long period. Not a short burst of super deprivation. Your body 'detoxes' for you automatically. Also, it's not a choice between stuffing all the Christmas food down in 2 days and then detoxing vs chucking it all out now. Just eat plenty of healthy food and gradually use up the less healthy stuff in small amounts.

I really don’t throw much away, two 6ft teenagers usually see to that!!
I have reduced what I buy because of what was being thrown away. I really don’t need to eat the leftover roasties!
chocolates and biscuits don’t get thrown, those disappear when the teens surface 😄
Ive made a note to buy a smaller turkey next year as I have frozen over half of the leftovers.

aCatCalledFawkes · 01/01/2025 09:14

You can eat all those foods on diets like slimming world or weight watchers.

For example, I had some left over blue cheese in my soup yesterday and we had left over meats as part of our NYE meal. And chocolate doesn’t need to be eaten in one go you can one or two for desert.

You can also make sure you get out for a walk or exercise in the day to help burn some of it off.

Unless you mean you want to binge eat for the next four days which would probably means your not ready to diet…..

SallyWD · 01/01/2025 09:15

We have a few mince pies left and some cheeses. It's not too bad. I'm just going to eat them slowly in moderation. Eg - I can add some of the cheese to an omelette for lunch - no need for me not to eat healthily.

sonjadog · 01/01/2025 09:17

If I ever want to get rid of cake/chocolate/biscuits, I take them to work. They disappear within the hour.

BigDahliaFan · 01/01/2025 09:25

Dh has been I'll so not had people round to same extent as normal. I've frozen a lot of it...cheese, mince pies, salmon. The Christmas pudding will keep till next year.

I've regifted some chocolate.

NoSquirrels · 01/01/2025 09:40

Meat and cheese aren’t unhealthy, just eat them with salad! Ditch the dips, and any associated crisps. Keep the chocolate.

OvertiredandConfused · 01/01/2025 09:48

Whatever resolutions I make, I always start on the second Monday in January. Don’t really tel, people or make a fuss. Works better for me to start when others are giving up!

polpolpolpol · 01/01/2025 09:48

I recognise the 'I will do it once I have eaten X/Y/Z' - it ultimately means you are not ready to succeed. Sorry OP.

flumposie · 01/01/2025 09:51

I will try to be good from next week. Having a roast dinner today. Have enough chocolates and biscuits to last for a few more weeks, but in small quantities. It's my daughter's birthday on Saturday so more cake etc.

Doggymummar · 01/01/2025 09:52

I've just asked my other half if he has anything he would like me to take to the food bank (12 boxes of Ferrero Rocher?) and he looked at me like I was mad. Then said Mars Bars, then said no his sisters can have them. He is restrained around food. I. Terrible and this time last year triggered a binge that lasted until about August before I caught it.

Rather than chuck it , donate if you can, but chech the use by dates. I did my fridge just now and the cheese and pate is good till March. Mince pies where the boxes were open went to the birds yesterday and the 15p veg went in a soup.
