Just checked my chicken in the fridge I was planning to roast tomorrow.

Blasted thing expired yesterday. WIBU to keep until tomorrow or should I chuck in the oven today and have a New Year's Eve roast instead?

Sniff it and see. Then blast the bastard.

And smother it in citrus, surrounding it with sliced lemon/orange, garlic and onions in the roasting tray will taste amazing! Could stick some bacon slices on the top too. God I want chicken now! We have roast pork for tomorrow (dh's choice).

I'm usually open minded about dates and happy to push it, except with chicken. I wouldn't even leave it one day and still eat it.

Notrynajudge · 31/12/2024 16:08

Chicken passed the sniff and slime test with flying colours so now happily in the oven at 190 for the next 1.5 hours. Smothered with garlic and herbs. I'm sure it will be fine.

Thanks for all the humorous responses on ExH. Christmas is hard for me these days so thanks for the chuckle alongside the poultry advice.

Nor me. I ate a yogurt that was a month past its bb date yesterday. It was delicious and I’m obviously still here.

Yoghurts are usually fine for at least a month past their use by date.

Chickens not so much, but I wouldn't worry about it being a day out of date as long as it doesn't smell off.

whatisforteamum · 31/12/2024 16:27

How bizarre.
The sniff test is used as well as the use by...consume by.Not to replace it.
As a chef I wouldn't feed it to anyone let alone dcs.
If all food poisoning could be smelt then I'm sure doctors would love that.

How do you think people managed in the days before use by / consumer by dates . Common sense is needed in these cases .

Shops and restaurants have to err on the side of caution.

That means that a chicken which is only one day past its date and doesn't smell off is almost certainly absolutely fine.

I've had this a couple of times when life has got in the way of meal plans. Like you, if it passes the texture and sniff tests it gets cooked asap. I've chucked out in date chicken which has smelt vinegary before and I'd say I'm quite precious about cooking chicken and fish.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 31/12/2024 16:45

@Notrynajudge chuck it in now! slice it up and make gravy and put in a large flatish dish and tomorrow just pop it in with the roast potatoes to heat up!

Boomer55 · 31/12/2024 16:54

Look at it and smell it. It'll be fine.

MidnightMeltdown · 31/12/2024 17:06

It'll be fine for a couple of days. Shops will err of caution when putting BBE dates on meat.

However, this is MN, so you should probably chuck out everything in your fridge and disinfect the entire house. Just in case.

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/12/2024 22:24

I remember my mother telling me (this was 50 years ago) that if (red) meat whiffed a bit, it would usually be fine if you washed it in vinegar. I can't remember whether I ever did that, but certainly I never became ill as a result of my mother's cooking. It's good that our food hygiene standards are higher, but I think we probably have a little leeway.

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/12/2024 22:29

Coincidentally. tonight we dined on sausage rolls courtesy of a half pack of sausage meat sitting at the bottom of the fridge. I thought I'd better get it cooked asap. That's the only downside of DH cooking Christmas dinner - I never know what's left over and where it's ended up..

Notrynajudge · 31/12/2024 22:40

Happy to report that the chicken was duly roasted at 190 for more than 1.5 hours. Lovely and tender. Served with roasted vegetables, roasties, yorkshire puds, red cabbage. DCs, I and ExH all happily fed and no inappropriate reappearance of said chicken yet. Hopefully no explosive start to 2025.

Happy New Year to all😊
