To NOT believe some of the threads posted on Mumsnet?

Some are far fetched, some threads ask for advice then the posters don't bother to respond when asked for details, some threads just seem to be started for provocation.
I don't mind any of the above...but I certainly don't believe they are all genuine.

Of course. Loads of trolls about - I'm starting to be able to recognise the writing patterns now.

gamerchick · 31/12/2024 13:35

Have you just realised? Grin

It's probably wise to take all of them with a pinch of salt.

TwinkleLights24 · 31/12/2024 13:36

I sometimes think some are made to get people commenting and to keep the site busy but then I remember people really can be lacking in common sense.

OnlyHereForTheChristmasBoard · 31/12/2024 13:37

Be prepared for MNHQ to take this thread down. 'Not in the spirit', or something.

STOPCOLLABERATEANDLISTEN19 · 31/12/2024 13:37

its entertainment, like Eastenders, that is all

stayathomer · 31/12/2024 13:37

I don’t know but I find it sad when people automatically jump in with it’s not true and there’s a chance the poster needed actual help. I think some people can’t take the way they’re spoken to on mn and so probably don’t look at the post again or are afraid to reply (also it’s a pity mn don’t put it in your notifications if people respond as you could have had it languishing for some time then people reply!)

ilovesooty · 31/12/2024 13:38

Whether they're genuine or not a lot of posters don't want advice. However even when they've said they don't they tend to get it anyway.

Flavabobble · 31/12/2024 13:38

I reckon there's a fair few ai ones.
Eg "write me a typical Mumsnet post about a narcissist sister in law who will only eat wheat before 11am"

I haven't been here long and I didn't read Mumsnet before I started posting, lets just say I soon suspected all were not genuine.😁

Along with "words on a screen".

Is free speech not allowed on here then?

I agree, I would always err on the side of caution.
If I think a post isn't genuine, I just wouldn't bother answering.

Very wise if somewhat forthright poster.

lapislapis · 31/12/2024 13:44

I also think that a lot is true

Lilifer · 31/12/2024 13:44

"Is free speech not allowed on here then?"

hell no! Where did you get that idea from?

Cherrypickled · 31/12/2024 13:45

And greatly exaggerated. Especially on the 3 thread sagas.

So do I.
I read one last night that actually made me cry, it was 100% genuine imo.

It depends on the category of discussion.

Free speech allowed = car parking, acceptable food at a buffet, complaining about your husband
Free speech not allowed = anything in favour of trans people, Meghan Markle, how often to use towels before washing them

RupertCampbellBlacksEgo · 31/12/2024 13:50

Free speech is not a thing in UK, but there's freedom of expression, which is to stop the state persecuting people in specific scenarios.

Pancakeflipper · 31/12/2024 13:51

Noticed a huge increase of the word 'mom' in posts in the last few months and they've turned out to be creative works of fiction.

Unless there is suddenly an increase in posters from Birmingham.🤔

How would you know though ? American English tend to be used in a lot of countries and mumsnet users are not all based in the UK.

These are describing UK systems (e.g. schools, NHS) saying they in the UK and using 'mom'. As I said - huge noticeable increase in the last couple of months.
