To think you don’t really visit somewhere when you go on a cruise?

Recently spent a week on an island and rented a villa, drove around the whole island, tried different restaurants, villages, beaches etc cetera.

My dad visited the island on a cruise as an excursion. They had half a day there and got off at the cruise dock and sat on the beach.

I asked if he’d like to go back and he said no he’d already been there. So I said sure you’ve seen a little bit of the place but you’ve not really visited somewhere if you just go for a half a day on a cruise. Then he got pissy with me and said of course he’s visited

One thing that puts me off going on cruises is sleep. Been on overnight ferries and couldn’t sleep in cabin bed due to vibrations and noises from engine.

Some cabins get more vibrations and noise than others, but never too bad. But if you pick a cabin between two decks of other cabins (so there's a cabin above and below you, rather than a restaurant, theatre etc) then noise and vibration tends to be at a minimum. I've been on quite a few cruises, and never had a problem with noise or vibrations, even when being randomly allocated a cabin. It's nowhere near as bad as on an overnight ferry. Sometimes on a cruise, you can't even tell that the ship is moving.

I generally sleep pretty badly but when I am on cruises sleep much better! I put it down to the slight rocking and the sea air

We are going on a cruise which includes Ephesus next year and will certainly be looking at the ruins thoroughly. Don't tar all cruise ship passengers with the same brush.

That is what we saw. None in the merchants houses at all.

Watch out for the “genuine fake Rolex” signs in the market the bottom , those made me laugh and go and see the Temple of Artemis. It is well work it. There is a lovely restaurant near it that does delicious coffee and cake.
