I'd particularly like to hear from anyone that have cured driving anxiety with hypnosis. But I'm about to spend a lot of money so anyone's experience of hypnosis is appreciated x

If you need hypnosis, then you need to go to them. The home stuff is just nonsense.

My DH had it for the fera of flying he thinks he’s completely cured, the rest of the family totally disagree, he’s a hot angry mess when we fly and I can’t sit near him, it’s like he’s telling us “I’m not scared” but he really is his behavior and sweating and anger and lack of self awareness and wild eye rolls are all clearly signs he’s actually petrified.

So all it’s done is made him “mask” the fear in his own brain but I’d say it hasn’t worked he says it has!

I mens he gets on flights yes, but no bugger wants to go with him, it take about a day for him to calm down then he’s all snappy the day before going home.

This is so interesting. I sort of used it to give up smoking - it worked for 2 years before I started again, so maybe it was masking. I'm smoke free again thank fck.

Although this is a zombie thread, it caught my attention because I'm struggling with food noise and so might have a mooch around YouTube for free stuff, so thanks for reviving the this @FRUPPA .

I haven’t had hypnotherapy but am considering EDMR for driving anxiety. Mine is only around Motorways and flyovers and seemed to start in perimenopause.

But if it's free, then what's to lose? I think if you are determined for it to work, then 50% of the work is already done for you.

That's true, but you could say the same about extracting a painful tooth. Given a length of cotton and a brick, you could do it yourself...

I'm not sure that's quite the same thing 🤭. I gave up smoking using free hypnosis, so not only was it not painful, but saved me tons of 💰.
Thanks for participating though 👍.

That's OK. I also stopped a 50 year smoking habit with hypnosis. It's what I do. 😏

@Thecatspantaloons It can work well for food noise. If you look at my AMA on remedial hypnosis you'll see the results from actual MNers.

I will do thank you so much 😘.
Actually, I'd be willing to pay for a solution to this, to proper change my eating habits long term, without going down the expensive injection route.

mindutopia · 22/08/2026 16:35

Yes, but don’t just use some track you found on YouTube. See an actual hypnotherapist. One with proper training and experience. I’d recommend a solution based hypnotherapist personally.

@Eyesopenwideawake any chance of a link, please?

There are many, many studies to show that hypnosis/hypnotherapy can be effective for a wide range of mental and physical issues.

You know that, with one practitioner, it did not work for you for one issue. That's all.

I’ve yet to met a hypnotist who would offer a free trial to see if it’s going to work
and yes they say it can be effective but I’ve not found any data that supports medical evidence to support this
I’d love to see some links

I do.

I also give a money back guarantee if it doesn't work.

Try this google search "scholarly articles on hypnosis".

Arhh bugger didn’t notice the zombie thread. I’m glad you quit again though. I do think it is just a mask, but if it works it works!!

Yes definitely menopause can contribute
my anxiety is exactly the same
I’m a perfectly calm and confident driver on normal roads and familiar routes . Anxious mess on ring roads motorways and unfamiliar routes … petrified I will get lost and end up on a motorway
apparently could be linked to agoraphobia and fear of hieghts

And definitely try EMDR or cbt
I would discourage hypnotherapy based on mine and many others who have tried it and had zero results

You've not looked very hard then. I have twice had hypnosis, once for flying which was a total success, second for anxiety, again a total success. In each case, I had a free first session each time which was a trial.

It's really not difficult to find lots of scientific evidence, you just can't be arsed to look. It is said a small number of people are not susceptible to hypnosis, maybe you're one if you have ever bothered trying.

Not difficult to ask Google, even the NHS uses hypnosis. Happy? No, thought not, miserable bugger.

You’ve sent a link about hypnosis and IBS 🤣 not denying hypnosis can induce calm and reduce stress which is major contributing factor in IBS
I can assure you I have searched for medical evidence that’s states hypnotherapy is a proven cure for driving phobias and anxiety
btw not miserable at all ! happy to share my real experiences that’s all

here is no robust medical or clinical proof that hypnosis can "cure" driving phobias. While small case studies and anecdotal reports suggest it helps some people relax, large-scale, randomized controlled trials do not support hypnosis as a standalone or proven medical cure for specific phobias like vehophobia. 1]
What Science Says About Hypnotherapy

  • Lack of Large Trials: Medical groups like the NHS or the American Psychological Association note that high-quality evidence proving hypnosis permanently erases phobias is missing.
  • Small Studies: Most supportive claims come from individual case reports or small, uncontrolled observations rather than strict scientific testing. 1, 2]
  • Not a Magic Cure: Experts view hypnosis at best as a complementary tool for relaxation, not a guaranteed medical fix. 1]
Proven Treatments for Driving Phobias Medical guidelines strongly recommend evidence-based therapies instead of hypnosis:
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): The gold standard psychological treatment backed by extensive clinical trials.
  • Graded Exposure Therapy: Safely facing the fear by stepping back into a car or driving short distances under professional guidance.
  • VR Exposure: Using virtual reality simulations to reduce physical panic responses in a controlled setting. 1, 2]
If you or someone you know is struggling with a fear of driving, would you like information on local evidence-based CBT therapists or self-help exposure techniques available in the UK?

there you go you little ray of sunshine 🌞

I did when I was going through a really horrible break up. It was the weirdest experience I remember going into this lady’s conservatory and it was really hot. She asked me to take my hair tie out and get comfortable on a lovely sofa. I turned on my side and there was a vase with an orchid in it and she started talking to me. I should add we had had discussions before treatment about what I wanted from it. I basically wanted to be able to let go and smile again. Anyway, I’m not sure what happened in that hour as I was absolutely sound asleep I just remember her calling my name and saying it was time to wake up. I didn’t feel any different at all. However I did over the course of the following few days feel incredibly positive I would think about her and just smile. Even now as I type this 14 years on I’m actually smiling. I guess I’m still anxious to an extent but I got over that break up definitely with her help and encouragement.
