Is what the health visitor asked me today at my 6 weeks appointment.
I think I said everything before she said don't worry it's not a trick question.
Why did she ask that? Is it a normal question that they ask everyone? And what was I supposed to answer that with?

Don't take it personally op. Health visitors have a duty of care for the baby AND the mum and by asking that, they're gauging if you're happy with baby or if you may be struggling.
It's just part of the job.

Yes, I have a 12 week old and was definitely asked this at my 6 week appointment! As the above poster said, it's to gauge how you're doing, if you're struggling, any signs of PND etc. You wasn't supposed to say anything, just the truth! I think I said about him smiling at me, learning about the world, there's no right answer x

I opted out of my HV appointments with DC2.

I think I was asked something along those lines but it was very subtle and I don't think I questioned it at the time at all but now you ask it it makes sense!

I actually think it's a really good way for them to identify if a mum might be struggling and then they can offer more support which is exactly what they're there for.

Yes, my HV asked me this too when DD was less than a month old.

I said something like "she is a lovely baby". I found it a silly question and was not sure what else to say - the HV gave me very searching look when she asked too! All DD did at the time was feed, poo and cry - she was definitely not smiling by then and did not seem to care one jot who held her, only that she was being constantly held (!)
The HV seemed happy with this response and cooed back "ohhh you have a lovely bond".

Whilst she was pleasant enough I am glad that I did not have her visit when I had DS four years ago - I had an utterly wonderful HV who was so very kind when I was faced with round the clock colic and thought my life was over - thankfully nobody asked me anything so daft then.
