Hypnosis

It can't be for real can it?!?
I'm watching Darren Brown Showman now and it's crazy how quickly and how deeply he hypnotises people.
What do others think, has anyone seen him do it live, or has anyone been put under? What does it feel like, I don't think I'd like the idea of having so little control.

Not Derren Brown but I have seen someone else hypnotise people in about 5 mins. I wouldn't have believed it myself if it wasn't for the fact that my brother was one of the people hynotised and he was definitely under!! I also volunteered, as did my partner, but it didn't work on us.

Pippa12 · 30/12/2024 22:09

I’ve been hypnotised for fear of flying. It was a bizzare experience and the result remarkable. I’ve flown 4 times since and haven’t so much as flinched!

buttonousmaximous · 30/12/2024 22:34

I was hypnotised to stop smoking, reduce anxiety and fear of flying all three worked

TR888 · 30/12/2024 23:22

This is so interesting. I have a fear of driving and it's getting worse rather than better. Did yiu do your hypnosis sessions face to face or online, and does it matter? If online, I wonder if you could PM me the name of your hypnotherapist? Thanks!

Scutterbug · 30/12/2024 23:23

I tried for anxiety but they couldn’t put me under, I was too anxious 😂😂

Wendolino · 30/12/2024 23:26

DH was hypnotised by a stage hypnotist years ago. He was told he had to keep going up on stage to ask the same question.
Each time he sat down he said Oh I'll just go and ask him......... and off he went.
DH is the most sensible, level headed person, the last person I'd ever think would be hypnotised.

I didn't follow the initial instructions as I didn't want to go under!

LeavesOnTrees · 30/12/2024 23:28

I never really believed it until I saw a hypnosis show at uni. Some really did fall under, they weren't faking.
The hypnotist started out with a lot of volunteers, well over 20 and he only carried on the show with a few of them, so it didn't work on everyone.

strawberryblue · 30/12/2024 23:47

I was hypnotised for a driving test. Well for driving test anxiety! And I passed!!!

strawberryblue · 30/12/2024 23:47

@TR888 after so many failed tests and anxiety hypnosis really helped me pass I truly believe it was that!

Garlicwest · 30/12/2024 23:50

I'm a big fan of hypnotherapy. I need some now, and can only find people who'll do it online. I can't imagine this working well (so that would be a block in the first place). Can anyone encourage me? And if so, recommendations as they'd no longer have to be local to me?

MyrtleStrumpet · 30/12/2024 23:57

From discussions with professional hypnotists and other research, including being part of a stage hypnosis show in the 1980s, it's mostly about being willing to be hypnotised - and there will be a lot of people in the audience who will want to be hypnotised.

Once you're up there, it's a matter of not wanting to spoil the show, or being super willing to go along with it. If a subject isn't prepared to do something, then the hypnotist will quickly change the direction to keep the show going.

I went to one of his shows 10 years ago about healing and his methodology was so close to my evangelical background that I just remained seated throughout. I was shocked that I was the only person sitting, so there is a group mentality. It only takes 20 willing people to make a good show.

It’s definitely real. I’ve seen Darren Brown live and also other shows. It doesn’t work on me though, I don’t think I’m ‘willing’ enough!

I’ve always been quite skeptical but some people swear by hypnotherapy for stopping smoking and other issues.

DancingHippos · 31/12/2024 00:07

You are giving someone access to your free will, to your soul. I wouldn't do it.

Pomegranatecarnage · 31/12/2024 00:09

My daughter was severely anorexic, and we tried hypnotherapy as a last resort-it worked. I also had hypnotherapy to help with feeling stuck in a rut-it also worked! -

TR888 · 31/12/2024 00:12

I really need some recommendations! And those of you who had successful sessions, did any of you do them online?

I had two face-to-face sessions but I didn't like the hypnotherapist's style - he was too dramatic rather than relaxing. And I think I'd prefer a woman, so I can relax more fully (if that makes sense!).

Yep, I've seen hypnotherapists of both sexes and work much better with women. I love Derren Brown - and have been 'fooled' by some of his suggestions to the audience at live shows - but, overall, I've had far more bad experiences with controlling men than women; I can't see any mileage in giving my subconscious an extra thing to worry about!

I REALLY want to know if online has worked for many people, too. I'm somewhat dubious.

FuckItItsFine · 31/12/2024 01:33

I’ve tried hypnotherapy for my work anxiety but sadly it didn’t seem to “take” for me. Definitely depends on the person.

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 31/12/2024 10:37

Thanks for the responses, to those that have been hypnotised did you lose all control of your actions and are you aware cat the time?
I saw a Daren Brown show years ago and he had a woman on stage drinking pints of vinegar!
I tried to get hypnotised for insomnia, it didn't work and I felt like I was just sat in a chair with my eyes closed while she spoke. What does it feel like when it does work, is it like being asleep?

OP posts:
MyrtleStrumpet · 31/12/2024 12:17

I was totally aware the whole time.

Garlicwest · 31/12/2024 17:21

@NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle It's not like being asleep but it can be like dreaming. I've genuinely believed I was on a sun-soaked beach, could smell the salty air, see sand beneath my bare feet ... it was a surprise to find myself suddenly in the therapist's office, just like being woken in the middle of a dream!

I did feel I was back from a two-week holiday, though 😎 The after-effects tend to last longer than a dream's - because we intend them to. Most hypnotherapy, ime, is more about talking through the things you want to deal with than having a quick holiday. You're never unconscious, you're having a conversation with your own unconscious mind and you are aware of this.

Remember Derren Brown calls himself an illusionist: hypnosis is only part of what he does. It probably wasn't vinegar.

Tostig · 31/12/2024 20:39

I was taught self hypnosis by my consultant as he knew I was scared of having my baby. Labour lasted for 27 hours (through the Storm of 1987) but having hypnosis at intervals was a great help.
I still use hypnosis when I go to the dentist, and never have numbing injections. Certainly recommended!
