So, at age 47, am I classed as a senior?

Feeling depressed

Scrolling on here and saw an advert for intermittent fasting…for seniors. It had pictures of all the different ages of women, up to about 80 I think. The youngest category was age 46-51

So age 46 upwards is classed as being a senior 😩

Ok, young is up to age 25.
adult is 25-75.
senior is 75+
old is 85+

middle aged is in the region of the menopause in my view, so maybe 45-60

I certainly did not think of myself as “middle aged” at 40. In fact (now I’m early 50s) I’ve only really begun to admit I must be middle aged. Mind you, I think of the term as an attitude rather than a chronology. Strictly speaking, if we live until 85, then 40s ARE middle aged, maybe even bits of your 30s are; and after that comes senior according to that philosophy.

Nah. Come on, we are Gen X. Not doddery old dears. Not yet anyway. Well, maybe occasionally. After a late night. But generally no.

I’m a Xennial..I accept i’m not young anymore, but a senior…that’s ridiculous

I'm 51 and keep getting asked if I want to make a will and suggesting I would be better off in retirement. Homes .

Time40 · 30/12/2024 21:29

"Senior" is from 60 for getting money off things like gym membership ... but it's not all that senior, really!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 30/12/2024 21:33

Not a senior because I’m not at 50! I still consider myself middle aged, it’s a range, I’m not literally expecting to live to 100!

Dh is older but not old at 64! My dm and dd are even older in their 70’s and maybe they would be considered seniors but it seems a derogatory term so I prefer older.

I used to work on an older persons mental health ward, it was 65 and over, below that was working age.

Well, I have been called, "The boa constrictor" I can eat quite a big dinner then go off food again for a while. Then again, I work in catering and hospitality so you kind of see food differently. I know, "Never trust a skinny cook" but I'm more waitress/sommelier.

I spent years just eating when I was hungry (as opposed to breakfast / lunch / dinner). I was at my best weight during that time.

Hurrayforfridays · 30/12/2024 21:37

No, you're not a senior at 47... I think that's usually seen as someone who's retired (so 60/65) although you do become eligible for retirement flats at 55 so that's something to look forward too 😂

Who is asking this?? That’s insane

47 is extremely late middle age, or a senior. My friend is having her first baby at just turned 40, and is classed as a geriatric mother.
People who think they are middle aged at 50 are deluded.

Edited

Why? Middle-aged is a wide range. And a very vague description. I'd put it as 0s to 30s = young, 40s - 60s = middle-aged, 70s plus = senior.

50s is definitely middle-aged.

Thepeopleversuswork · 30/12/2024 21:46

There's sometimes a kind of competitive ageism on here, of which @HellsBalls is a great example. People convincing themselves that life ends at 30, that anyone over the age of 40 has one foot in the grave and that people who don't feel like they should be in a nursing home from about 45 onwards are delusional.

Obviously health plays a part and no one can cheat death (yet) but our mental age is in large part attributable to how old we feel. People can behave in an elderly way in their late 30s or seem young into their 70s: a lot of it is to do with your outlook on the world and your appetite to try things. But a lot of people choose to narrow their life because they are basically scared of being laughed at by other people. It's pathetic.

There are threads all the time on here from people asking if they are too old to do things: too old to go clubbing or go to pubs or wear purple or go surfing or have long hair or whatever it may be. Who cares?

Why on earth would you preoccupy yourself with what a narrow minded randomer who doesn't know you would think about whether you wear purple? There's enough stress and tribulation in life without worrying about the opinions of idiots who don't count.

Stableable · 30/12/2024 21:54

I'd embrace it

No, I would say:

20-30 - Young adult
30-40 - Adult
40-50 - Middle Age
50-60 Senior / mature adult / late middle age if you prefer
60-70 Early old age
70+ Old age

cherish123 · 30/12/2024 23:56

No.

HauntedBungalow · 30/12/2024 23:59

Millennials were always going to be in denial about getting old.

Just as well OP isn't a millennial then.

Well, you're considered to be having a geriatric pregnancy if you're over 35. 35!

I think senior sounds nicer than geriatric, so it could be worse!

theduchessofspork · 31/12/2024 00:13

That’s just a weird AI ad, ignore

Anyway in this case senior is American for OAP, so no, you aren’t.

You are middle aged mid-life and a QUEENAGER

Years ago, I was under investigation for a medical issue (nothing to do with pregnancy).

CONSULTANT: Yes, this condition is associated with getting old.
ME: I've had it since I was 14. Was I "getting old" when I was 14?
CONSULTANT: Yes.

Doctors, couldn't eat a whole one. 🍴

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 31/12/2024 00:24

I am 68, I am reasonably fit. I swim, jog, and cycle, albeit slowly. I consider myself to be late middle-aged. I am not sure when I will tumble into "seniorship". Mum is in her 90s, and soldiers on, but I don't think she pretends to be middle-aged any more.

Dearg · 30/12/2024 19:57

Well fuck that! I am 63 and think I am middle aged .. senior is like 70+ …

I am 68 and thinking it time I started to grow up now I am heading towards middle age. Senior is way ahead😂

In 1983, I had my first pregnancy. I was 27 and officially an "elderly primagravida".
