SIL offered over Christmas at ours to log in to a paid streaming service for the kids. DS loved it and there was talk of us signing up in the new year (when another one we use expires).

It seems she's signed up for an annual pass, which apparently allows multiple devices and now wants half the cash.

I want to say no, but the fact she's gone ahead without asking makes me think this will go badly.

"No thank you"

It's meant to be multiple devices from one household, not that that stops most people.

She doesn't get to spend your money though so it's fine and completely normal to say No.

My parents and I pay for a couple between us and just share the logins.

Which streaming service? Many are, or already have, clamped down on sharing with multiple households. This is different to multiple users. I'd just say "thanks but it's something we're going to wait until January to look into ourselves." If you can't, tell her you don't want the risk of them clamping down on multiple households using the same login.

We shared a Disney+ account with family but for the past few weeks we have not been able to access it, as we are a different location from the main account holder. Ended up needing to subscribe ourselves now. We also used to share our Netflix account but I believe that's not allowed now either (we cancelled earlier in the year).

I suspected as much with the household thing, so I'm guessing if detected we'd be kicked off anyway.

I just feel bad because I think she's chosen a premium (more expensive) option than she already had and has now paid up front rather than as she goes to 'share' with us.

It's a lesson for her in not spending money expecting to be reimbursed without a conversation first, then.

Some of them allow you to add an extra household

by the way, some of them (for example Now Tv) if you go to cancel your membership it asks if you are sure, then gives you an offer of a really cheap subscription for another few months. It is always worth going through this process if you are paying the full fee

With Netflix you have to log on occasionally at the main bill payers IP address
