To ask about a certain kids' TV programme?

I just wonder if any Mumsnetters remember this kids' TV programme from circa 2011.

I think it was on ITV but can't be sure .. but was definitely on one of the main channels.

It was a factual 'reality' type programme whereby there was a child of around 10 - give or take - and a single parent. And the presenter helped the child's single parent find a date based on their interests, fashion preferences etc. The child would comment on what they thought the parent would like, etc.

I'm definitely correct about the date - it was most DEFINITELY circa 2011.

I've got an affection for all things of the early 2010s so tend to google a lot of programmes that were broadcast then ... but this one, I can't find anything, anywhere about it !!! NADA!! Someone must know, surely ?

On another level though, this, as I say would've been definitely on one of the 'main' pre digital TV channels, ITV I think - but in general I'm amazed how children's TV has disappeared completely from the 'mainstream' channels of BBC1, ITV etc and is now on designated kids' channels - CBBC etc.

For instance. I have difficulty getting my head round Blue Peter no longer being on BBC1!!!

Well, what happened in the show?

Like they pick 1975, and the kids chooses some clothes for their mum or something?

secondsoutthere · 30/12/2024 15:39

Don't think the date means a calendar year Smile

whosaidtha · 30/12/2024 15:40

Was it marrying mum and dad? Where kids planned their parents wedding?

secondsoutthere · 30/12/2024 15:40

I don't remember the show - my children would have been 3/4 yo but I do remember 'marrying mum&dad' for children whose parents weren't married. So they did the wedding I think?

No not that sort of date 🤣

The parents says they want to pick a potential partner, the kid talks to their presenter about the type of person they’d like to meet, their interests etc - then I think they go on the date a bit like First Dates or whatever … anyway, somehow they manage to find enough material to pad the program out for half an hour or so …

Thanks everyone - don’t think it’s ‘Marrying Mum and Dad’ tho ‘cos it’s about just the dates / initial meeting not the wedding

Even if that 2004 link isn't it - good idea to check 2000s programmes, as it may have been a repeat or later series of something which started in the 00s.

OK have done some googling about the 2004 article - it seems this programme "Date My Mum/Date My Dad" was commissioned but never made, because the year after that there was a big shake up at the BBC, and the person who commissioned it quit. It was scrapped because the BBC had a policy not to show reality shows and they basically thought it was too lowbrow.

But she went on to work in commercial TV so it's quite possible that she put forward the same idea under another name for a commercial channel a few years later. Lorraine Heggessey is the name.

Thanks so much - the titles you mention really sound like the theme of the show
