I cannot believe that this lad is going to spend a year in prison- yes, I know that’s the law there, he should have known better etc, etc
I hope that the girl’s mother is ashamed of her actions.
I don’t want to think what the impact will be on Marcus 😥

More minor than shagging your gf?

In the eyes of Islam this is haram and yes there are many people in jails for this sort of thing. In KSA people were getting stoned to death for less not so long ago.

icelolly12 · 30/12/2024 18:29

There's hundreds of thousands of men sitting in jails all across the world right now for far more minor crimes. Being British doesn't give you an exemption.

Can you give some examples?
These two young people are very close in age and had a consensual relationship.
Your view is very callous. I would rather save prison for more serious crimes rather than trying to fill them up with minor crimes.
Another punishment, sure, maybe a lifetime ban from UAE but a year in prison?

Plastictrees · 30/12/2024 18:41

icelolly12 · 30/12/2024 18:37

I know it isn't. My point is that he has broken the law in an Islamic country known for its strict laws. In 2020 sex before marriage in the UAE was illegal full stop. He's serving one year in jail for breaking a law, and although I have some empathy I can't bring myself to get worked up over it as if it is some huge miscarriage of justice. The laws there are black and white.

Then why post in this thread at all?

You have made flippant and ignorant comments about ‘just a year’ in jail, when you’ve been corrected as to what the conditions will be like, you’ve got nothing to say.

If all you are going to do is repeat the same stock phrase over again, peppered with ‘I don’t care’ then demonstrate your attitude by disengaging with the thread.

Read up about countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran and Afghanistan.

What do you think about people getting stoned to death for less?

I think we all know jails in Dubai aren't a holiday camp, like many places in the world. The point is that's a deterrant. Maybe this will lead more people to research the laws before travelling.

Can you evidence that jails in Dubai are a deterrent for crime?

hattie43 · 30/12/2024 18:45

I do think you visit Islamic countries at your peril . You can inadvertently commit a ' crime' very easily . Wasn't there the chap recently came a cropper because he bumped into someone in a bar who then complained and he was arrested .

I do wonder if this lad was an Asian Dr's son the story would be very different.

AccountCreateUsername · 30/12/2024 18:46

@icelolly12 I think it’s the vindictiveness and spite of the mother that’s getting flack. And rightly. Of course countries have laws. This mother weaponised that country’s laws to exact revenge on Marcus for having sex with her daughter, then slut shamed her own kid, despicable parent. That’s why she’s named and hopefully shamed.

Yes, I see you have mentioned people being stoned to death.

Do you think this is a fair punishment for adultery?

Would you feel the same if the woman had been 18 and the boy 17?

Lampzade · 30/12/2024 18:51

It is vital that people research the country they are to visit . Before I travel anywhere , I ensure that I read up on the laws , custom and culture
However, I feel so sorry for the young man and his family .
The girl’s mother is a very wicked woman
The irony is that her vindictiveness will have an adverse effect on her daughter.
She has been identified on social media and her relationship with this young man may reduce her chances of finding a suitable partner within her culture

churrios · 30/12/2024 18:51

The girl’s mother if she did falsely report a rape has broke the law in both the UK and Dubai, I would like to see her spend time behind bars.

‘Dirty young man’ ah we are getting to the bottom of the reasons behind your views now aren’t we.

Despicable. His crime was not researching the laws of the country his family holiday was to.

This is where your confusing my opinion with feelings. Its irrelevant what I think as the law states that you cannot have sexual relations under the age of 18 in that country.

The law in Dubai Is black and white and he broke the law. My opinion does not matter one jot, he was found guilty and handed himself in. He is a convicted criminal in that country, end of story.

I referring to the point you made about the very many people in prisons worldwide for lesser crimes.

Marcus wouldn't be in prison if it weren’t for the malicious actions of the girls mother. She made the report knowing that sex was consensual and no doubt hoping for an even harsher punishment.

This isn’t about Emerati law, it’s about the actions of a disapproving mother.

‘Dirty young man’ - well your true colours are well and truly shining through now

What a repulsive thing to say about an 18 year old who did something daft

Think we had an inkling all along but that comment really shown the reality.

Disgusting words to use about a young man.

Of course not which is why I wouldn't visit Saudi or countries with such laws and if I did I certainly wouldn't break any laws.

Your opinion matters on this thread where people are expressing opinions.

You've made it fairly clear what you think anyway with the "dirtly young man" comment.

I would not call it daft I would call it illegal, but here you are yet again spouting opinions not facts. He is in prison and is guilty of a crime, so no its not daft it was illegal.

You seem very cold. I hope you don’t have children, not one bloody ounce of compassion.
