to think I can't just leave work half an hour early because it's slightly more convenient?

I work as an afternoon/evening typist for one department of a large law firm. Monday-Thursday there are two of us here but on Friday it's just me covering all of the department's typing needs after the secretaries leave for the night.

Tonight DH is picking me up from work and we are driving directly to my parents' house, a couple of hundred miles away. He wants me to email my supervisor and ask whether I can leave early tonight. He mentioned it this morning but I went back to sleep and forgot all about it and he's just reminded me about it again by email.

I've told him I'm happy to leave 10-15 minutes early if there's no one here (which is always a possibility on a bank holiday weekend) but I think it's unprofessional and taking the piss to ask to leave half an hour early for no good reason. It's still going to be around midnight by the time we arrive and it's going to make no difference regarding the traffic so I think it's pointless.

On the other hand, I'm leaving in three months anyway (and they know this) so perhaps looking professional doesn't really matter!

I would, but then I work flexi.

I don't think it looks at all unprofessional to ask to leave early if it isn't something you make a habit of.

Rainy...tis friday.....half an hour is nothing....what are you going to do in that last half an hour that will matter over the weekend and cant be dont in the first half an hour of your next shift???

Go and start the weekend early....says she who bunked off at half 2

MascaraOHara · 02/05/2008 16:41

It's not unprofessional these days to ask if you can shoot off half hour early and make the time up next week (or whatever)..

lollipopmother · 02/05/2008 16:41

I would've asked to work through lunch or only take half my lunch, I do this quite a bit, but I always make sure I ask before I do it.

CountessDracula · 02/05/2008 16:42

You know what
I think you are right
If there are people relying on you to be there I think you should be

mummydoc · 02/05/2008 16:42

i would ask, but have to say stoppinattwo's attitude made me a bit cross, you sound like you have a fantastic work ethic, and your firm is lucky to have you,

RainyWednesday · 02/05/2008 16:45

Hee hee You are all very naughty!

Thanks mummydoc - they haven't got me for much longer!

I still feel too cheeky to do it though

Oh also if I am given any work to do in the last half hour then they will need it done right that minute - it's not a question of just doing it next week as it will be something that the poor sod lawyer needs to work on over the weekend.

And my break is only half an hour anyway so I can't not take it.
