Cabin Crew job when kids are grown up

AIBU? Told DH I was looking at cabin crew jobs today just for fun and he looked horrified-but you have a husband and children!

Would it be unreasonable to think about something like this when the children are grown up? However in ten years time I will have reached the grand old age of almost 55!

Is it a pipe dream?! I love the idea of exploring the world and getting paid for it when the children are grown up. DH is horrified 🫢

Look at https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5239930-is-38-too-old-to-become-cabin-crew. Sounds like it’s possible.

It sounds fun, but I think in reality is more visiting various airports, and not seeing much else

Elaine1011 · 29/12/2024 16:44

Not a pipe dream if you are realistic. Not sure from this post if you are. I've worked in travel for many years and know lots of cabin crew. Most do it when younger, just for a few years, some last longer, less come to it later in life.
It's a mix of backgrounds really but generally you need to be fairly fit, adaptable, flexible with shifts etc. Pay is quite low and hours are not standard even for short haul staff. Lots I know live in houseshares near their base airport. Mainly as they can't afford a mortgage on their pay but also because you'll need to be within a certain distance to be considered. Also since a few airlines have gone bust or downsized in recent years the competiton for new roles can be high.
It doesn't lend itself to usual part time hours due to the amount of setting up, travel, border checks, etc involved even for short hop flights. Less so if you want to properly "see the world." You need a partner who is happy to pull their weight. Would it be OK for you to be away for a week at a time?
Any previous experience that would be beneficial? Otherwise it would be very hard to get into anyway.

I work for one of the biggest airlines in the country. I'd saw over half of the women I work with are married with children. As someone who is TTC I regularly chat with my colleagues about how the juggle having a family and the job, all say it is easy and that being part time in the job allows you much more time at home than a 9-5 job

thrifty24 · 29/12/2024 16:45

@Jamrag apart from the pay, do you have the same thought that a pilot is no job for a married man, or woman?

I better leave my job then, in fact half of my colleagues better leave too

I don’t think it’s as easy as “travel the world and get paid for it”. Are you happy to travel long haul? Would you happy with how little you’d see your husband? I don’t think there’s anything wrong with looking and making an educated decision on if it would be right for you and your family.

Eh? Is it 1920?

HPandthelastwish · 29/12/2024 16:48

I'd watch some tiktoks or YouTube videos done by cabin crew, it's not a particularly easy job, some, possibly all air lines don't pay you until you shut the plane doors etc.

My small local airport does regular flights to Edinburgh and back, the cabin crew on that are more like the hospitality staff on a train going back and forth multiple times a day.

I’m not sure if they would be discussing my 55 year old tits…😆

I’m unlikely to still be married by then as I’m separating from my husband (that’s a whole other thread!)

@Jamrag are you stuck in the 1920's? 😂

canyouletthedogoutplease · 29/12/2024 16:57

I don't think it's unreasonable if it's something you want to do. Your suitability for the role and it's attractiveness to you is something that you need to decide, not your marital status or age.

Dweetfidilove · 29/12/2024 16:57

@jamrag Why is it okay foe single women to listen to that talk?

LoudSnoringDog · 29/12/2024 16:59

I know a woman who got a cabin crew job with BA at the age of 50. Her Facebook posts are all in long haul destinations. Looks like she's fitting the role in well around her children ( youngest is 15)

Wonderi · 29/12/2024 17:06

Apparently it’s a job that many middle aged women aspire to (something about it being pushed/glamorised a few years ago) but the reality is that apparently the job isn’t that great.

It is typically for younger people, purely because it’s not great money and it’s a lot of overnight travelling which most parents can’t do.

I’m not sure how many companies will put a 55yo through the training and so your best bet would be to do it sooner rather than later.

What job do you do now and how old are your kids?

Why not do the training in the next couple of years and see if you can juggle it and family life.

If you can do it, then great 😊
If not, you’ve still got the training for when you are older and you’ll be more likely to be given a job.

thrifty24 · 30/12/2024 12:04

@jamrag isn't doing too well here

StiggyZardust · 30/12/2024 12:20

My colleague became air crew at the age of 55. She gave up nursing to work for Virgin.
