To want the car to move!

honeyandbutterontoast · 29/12/2024 16:19

Looking for honest opinions here because I’m aware this may make me seem like an AH.

I live in a road where the majority of houses don’t have drives. We park on the road. I knew that when I bought the house, it’s not permit parking but there is usually space for two small cars in front of my house. It has never been a problem in the time I’ve lived here, occasionally if there’s a local event I’ve had to park up the road for a few hours if I’ve been out, or for an evening.

Four weeks ago I came home from work to find a big car taking up both spaces outside. So I parked elsewhere. The car is still there.

Nobody has been to it, or moved it in that time and frankly I’m getting annoyed. I have to now park a long way from my house (else I’m in someone else’s space), which has been annoying with heavy bags of food shopping, or if I’m going out with the dog/DC. It’s meant if my mum has visited she’s also had to park elsewhere, again not ideal.

But what can I do? No point leaving a note as nobody has been to the car in that time (it’s right outside my window so I would see). None of the neighbours know who it belongs to either. It seems a stupid thing to get stressed about but I just want to be able to park outside my house!

I've had a rusty, broken shed of a car parked outside my bedroom (ground floor flat) window for 4 years
Nothing I can do as it's the neighbours and their space is outside my flat. It's annoying and I'm sick of seeing the moss growing but..

CatamaranViper · 29/12/2024 19:17

I work for a children's charity in a building right in the middle of a residential area. We have zero parking and no where nearby that allows all day parking. I tend to bus in and out but sometimes I do need the car and have to park outside someone's house.
We all get verbally abused for parking there by the residents, we've even had them egg the building and damage cars. We've had to involve the police but the residents seem to believe they have a right to park outside their houses. I'm sorry but they don't.
It's rubbish OP that it's causing you issues but you don't have a right to park there I'm afraid.

This has worried me! I have moved and hardly use my car now, yet I want to keep it to see if I need it. It is taxed (£0 but registered as such), MoT'd and insured; plus I pay for a parking permit. I do start it and drive it a little but to most people (unless they're looking out of their windows all the time!) it would look like it didn't move since I usually get the same spot when I return. I would be so upset to find it gone!

There's no need to worry. Please read the information at the link. The LA or Police would conduct investigations to establish if the car is stolen or abandoned. They wouldn't simply tow it away on the say-so of a disgruntled neighbour.

But do you park there for several weeks not moving the car?
as I’ve said no problem when there’s been a car there, it happens with visitors, local events etc. But this is 4 weeks without moving.

And I’m fairly sure if you could park a 2 min walk from where you do, in a clearly not used area you would? I’m sorry you’ve had vandalism issues, once again I will say I would not do that.

You purchased a house. The road is outside your house. It's not yours.
It's also not inconsiderate at all. It's a public road

I agree, every time you park on a public street with houses, you are parking outside someone's house!?!

Funny that I had someone as incredibly petty as you on my street once, that was until they got sick of repairing their tyres and paying to get the scratches out of there car ect.

Not as clever as you think you are, 🙄.

Wow very apt name there given you are a nutnut vandal (vandal apologiser eve if you are not THE vandal. You don’t specify your level of involvement in the crime…)

Yes, but one doesn't expect an abandoned car to sit in front of one's home for four week's, either.

OP isn't complaining because the neighbour's BIL parked in front of her house for a Christmas visit. The abandoned vehicle has been there for a month. Can one seriously not comprehend the difference, before finger-wagging at her?

Where is the evidence it's been "abandoned"? According to OP, it's a 7-8yr old car in good condition with valid MOT and VED. OP has only just reported it to her local authority who will conduct enquiries to establish if it has been abandoned (or maybe stolen?). Only when this question has been answered can any of us guess at the owner's motive for parking outside OP's house, but if it's not stolen and the owner hasn't abandoned it, they've done nothing illegal and OP will have to wait until they are ready to move it.

When you park 'a long way away' are you parking on a non residential road?

It’s a two min walk. The houses there have large drives and wide road frontages (and are set far back from the road). There are rarely cars there.

Really? So you're seriously suggesting that OP should disregard what is clearly written on askMID when doing such a check:

You are only entitled to the insurance information about the vehicle for one or more of the following reasons:

  • you are within the United Kingdom; AND
  • it is either registered/owned/insured by you or your employer;
  • you are permitted to drive it;
  • you are an Insurance Broker or Agent and acting on behalf of your client.

It is an offence to wrongfully obtain information of this nature without any of the above reasonable causes. The information provided must not be used for any purposes unrelated to this enquiry.

I leave my car for weeks/months outside someone else’s house as we have only street parking. I have no right to the space outside my house and it’s an absolute luxury if I get to park outside my house.

YABU, so much so, I’d purposefully park outside your house just to prove the point. But I’m incredibly petty.

Why do you have a car if you don't drive it for months at a time?

TheLizardQueen · 29/12/2024 19:45

I’ve had a car parked in my space for the last 6 weeks. Very frustrating, there’s nothing I can do since it’s taxed and MOTd. Ive no idea who it belongs to either 🤬

@Okonomoyaki

And yet weirdly the OP has found similar info to me...
Sure you can report a car after 2 weeks. If the checks are made and it's MOT'd and not stolen and is parked legally etc then they won't move it.

AngelicKaty · 29/12/2024 19:50

@TheLizardQueen But what do you mean by "my space"? If you mean a designated parking space that you bought or rented with your property then yes, that would be infuriating. If, however, you have the same situation as OP, with no off-street parking and no restrictions on the public highway (such as resident permit parking), then that's what you have to accept can/will happen.

No thanks, I have a moral compass and respect the law.

In fact, someone might have already photographed and put it on, check your postcode @honeyandbutterontoast. One for my postcode shown in here, isn't even illegally parked, just an ongoing nuisance.

@AngelicKaty nope but it’s right outside my house and I’ve parked in the same spot for 17 years. I’m aware I don’t own the space but still, it’s very frustrating when I can’t get parked near my house

Seymour5 · 29/12/2024 19:57

I live on a street with some houses having drives and some with no parking. The residents are all pretty considerate of one another, and most of the time we can park our one car near our house.

Every year there is a music festival nearby, the organisers put stewards on the local streets to ensure residents can park. It works well. There is also a football ground quite close. I never take my car out on match days, it’s mayhem.

Strangers do park, I suppose when their streets are full, but to leave a car somewhere for several weeks just feels a bit off.

AngelicKaty · 29/12/2024 19:57

@TheLizardQueen Ah, so now you're learning that it's not your space.

It doesn’t take a genius to realise that if you leave your car outside someone’s house for several weeks, where there is no driveway parking, it is likely to inconvenience them. So, the options are:-

  1. the car owner doesn’t realise this is inconvenient, which suggests they’re so stupid they probably shouldn’t be driving.
  2. something unexpected has happened eg hospital admission.
  3. they just don’t give a shit.

Judging from most of the replies on here, sadly I think option 3 is the most likely.
