would I be crazy to apply for this job?

Hello,

I currently work in a workplace where I am generally unhappy with difficult colleagues. I love the job itself but the workplace not so much.

I've noticed a job which I would absolutely love, however it's half my current hours. It's 20 hours a week and mornings only, however on the application it says they are looking at increasing their opening hours and therefore working hours will increase.

I just would adore this job. It's similar to what I'm doing now but more specific. It's 11.44 an hour so I'd be making shy of £1000 a month currently, not inlcuodng tax and NI.

I'm 26, I live with my parents and I have autism and Adhd. I pay towards things like my car, rent, pets etc. I'm not very good at money management currently but I feel if I have less money I would possibly get better at not spending it? I don't know. I don't know of there would be a possibility of me filling my afternoons with a different job? Something remote? Just to make a bit more money.

I don't know!! Am I crazy? Should I apply and see what happens? Or is it too ridiculous?

Thank you so much for any advice

The more I think about it the more I want to apply... But can't work out if it will be a bad move!

Also how do i write a covering letter? I've never done it before!

Maybe speak to your parents first and they can help you work out how much money you would have free to spend after rent, car, etc.

But if you're unhappy in your current job and think you'd prefer the new job, I'd go for it. It could open up other options for you in the future.

Minimum wage is also going up in April so in a few months the pay will be £12.21 at minimum.

Applying for a job doesn't mean you have to take it if you are offered it, but if you don't apply then you definitely won't get the choice!

Lots of info about writing a good cover letter here: nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/careers-advice/covering-letter

LittleRedRidingHoody · 29/12/2024 19:53

Apply for it! Not to be too negative, but you may not get an offer anyway - and any interview experience is good and opens your eyes to what is out there. Good luck 🤞

MaggieBsBoat · 29/12/2024 19:57

Nothing to lose! Apply! Good luck to you.

Iknitjumpers · 29/12/2024 19:58

You would probably regret it if you declined the opportunity. If it right up your street , you simply must apply! As for a covering letter, keep it brief. You can put across your interest in the job and that you would welcome an interview.

Best of luck!!

Go for it.
If you love the job it's worth the less pay.

JMSA · 29/12/2024 20:10

Go for it, OP. But make sure your parents are on-board first, just in case you ever find yourself short.
Morning job, evening job in a pub. Could be a lot worse!
Best of luck.

PrimalLass · 30/12/2024 09:21

Go for it. I've worked several jobs at a time and it's fine.

buttonousmaximous · 30/12/2024 10:22

I would say if you can an afford to do it you should. Being in a job you enjoy will help you regulate and you may find yourself coping better in other areas such as money management

cinnamonda · 30/12/2024 11:03

kudos to you for seeking to improve your working environment and for making the effort to make a change.
I think you should apply and see where it takes you. A Cover Letter is not hard to write, google sample Cover letters and check out their format. It usually states the key
Who - this is you applying so start by stating your name
What - state the position you are applying for. Then you continue to state Why you are a great candidate for the job, then When you are available.
hope this helps somewhat
best of luck, I hope it works out well for you

Hi everyone,

Thank you so so much for the advice and support. I'm sorry I didn't reply at the time I was very overwhelmed but I read everything and took it on board.

My patents were supportive, so I applied, interviewed and got the job :)

I'm very nervous, nervous to hand in my notice tomorrow (I'm not sure how to do it) and sad to be leaving for reasons but it will be good for me I think.

Thank you so much everyone :)

Well done!
Good news is that on the part time salary you're below the threshold to pay tax or NI, You should get a tax rebate of tax paid in your current job.

Use the additional time to learn some budgeting skills 😀
