My 4yo daughter had influenza A a few weeks ago (14 December ) she got over it very quickly, 48 hours. it was the rest of us that struggled for ages.

Today she has a fever of 38.2!!! - she said her throat is a little scratchy.

She seems ok otherwise, but my head goes straight to the worst ever situation, if she's getting reoccurring illnesses could there be something drastic underlying?

My finance is saying that if she was immune compromised from a disease like cancer she'd have held on to the flu for longer.

My minds all over the place today, be kind- I'm currently starting some medication and therapy for health anxiety as my son was born 8 months ago and was very poorly, in intensive care for ages- it was touch and go, which was when my health anxiety was born.

TIA for any reassurance. X

There are a lot of viruses that cause fever OP, hundreds even. If she doesn't have any other symptoms then she's handling it well. Getting over flu in 48 hours suggests a nice strong immune system. If she gets any worse symptoms then ask a GP.

She sounds strong and healthy OP. Little kids get fevers a lot. I am sure she will be fine. Fluids and rest and whatever you choose to give her for the fever xx

My son had influenza A and strep A at same time 2 years ago. Symptoms did come and go for a week or more

Thank you. My logical mind does like to tell me that she wouldn't have been as energetic as she has been the past 3 days with Christmas, Boxing Day and her nanny's birthday yesterday.

I think it's a shock as she's started reception this year and she's never been poorly before that really, so now I'm like WHY?

I don't like dragging her to the GP every time my mind goes wild. I keep my health anxious thoughts in, until the kids aren't around or I talk about it to friends via text or via Mumsnet.

She's happily playing with her Christmas toys as we speak, but in my head I'm like why are you spiking a fever? AGAIN in 2 weeks!

She's 4. It's the age they pick up anything and everything. Once their immune system is busy fighting flu, they're more vulnerable to other things and viruses can have long incubation times.

A temp of 38.2 is not on its own a worry, there's nothing at all out of the ordinary about what you've posted, and nothing to suggest there's anything else wrong.

UniversalTruth · 28/12/2024 11:52

Getting a new virus 2 weeks after flu is really very usual, especially in winter in a 4 year old who hadn't had many viruses before starting school.

I hope you can get some support for your health anxiety.

My DS was poorly on and off for a month. I thought it was a lingering virus. GP said there’s a lot going around and it was more likely he had caught 2 viruses in short succession. Don’t panic OP there’s a lot about at the moment.

I think it's a shock as she's started reception this year and she's never been poorly before that really, so now I'm like WHY

Because she’s just started reception! This is very common. They are mixing with a new population of kids and picking up viruses from them that they haven’t been exposed to before, so they’re not yet immune. So they get infected, fight it off, and THEN they’re immune. The same thing often happens when they start nursery or a new nursery.

Getting frequent illnesses, brief high fevers and then getting over them quickly is absolutely normal for that age. In fact it shows that her immune system is reacting quickly and effectively. Your fiancé is absolutely right.

At least you’re acknowledging that this is your health anxiety talking. I suspect it will take you quite a bit of work to get on top of that, but I hope you do, because health anxiety is no good for you or your child.
