To be cross that a mother took her healthy child to see a child with chicken pox because she wanted her child to get it which she did and now my daughter and few other in the class have got it from her DD

Just to add that if my kids are ill i would always tell a friend before visiting so they can make the choice whether they want to be exposed to whatever it is.

chicken pox doesn't make you 'unhealthy'!! It's a normal, childhood illness, best gotten over with as early as poss.

Astrophe · 03/05/2008 15:50

Wish my MIL had taken DH to get the pox when he was a boy. He has it at the moment, has been really ill, and a right PITA too.

Does anyone know if the UK is going to put Chicken POx on the Imms schedual? My DD was jabbed for it in Australia.

luminarphrases · 03/05/2008 16:11

but really, she could have got it from anyone, cos anyone could have it and you can't see.

my mum tried like buggery to make me get it as a child because my brother had it at 27 and spent three weeks in hospital. i eventually got it at 16 smack bang in the middle of my gcse's. it was a right pain in the arse

Nero · 03/05/2008 17:04

Yes, YABU. Jut be grateful your child has got it as a relatively young age.

MsPontipine · 03/05/2008 18:39

I was coming up to 30 when I had it. It was horrendous - I wanted to die. Ds had it at 3. You'd hardly know he had it apart from the itching which Piriton soon took care of. I'm really glad he had it young. They all had it in his class in nursery. If he hadn't and I knew of a friend with it I would be pretty keen to pay them a visit.

redadmiral · 03/05/2008 18:54

Friend's children were vaccinated in Australia where I think that is standard? Came over here and both got chicken pox within a year. Obviously vaccination isn't that effective in some cases.

nappyaddict · 03/05/2008 19:47

only read op but YABU. if you had 2 children and 1 got CP you wouldn't keep the other off school just incase they were going to give it everyone else.

Astrophe · 03/05/2008 20:47

interesting redadmiral. DD was vaccinated in Aus (it is standard - has been only for a few years though) - DH has it at the moment...will be interesting to see if DD gets it.

Thomcat · 03/05/2008 20:50

Everyone has to have had chicken pox at some stage, it;s just a fact of life.

Sexonlegs · 03/05/2008 20:53

I can understand why you are cross in some ways, but chicken pox is never going to be totally avoided.

As others have said, it is far better to get it during childhood.

Oblomov · 03/05/2008 20:58

YABU
When ds got chickenpox , I phoned all my post natal friends.
2 deliberately came round.
They wanted their children to have it.
I can't see what your problem is.

eekamoose · 03/05/2008 21:12

I think you are being ABU. My friend's children have it at the moment. They are 13 and 11 and somehow managed to avoid it in infancy. Sounds to me like they are all suffering much much more than my children did when they got it at 5 and 3. Infact, I was getting anxious because my 5 year old had never contracted it, despite being exposed lots of times when much younger. So in the end 3 year old DS got it first, then she did, neither of them suffered too badly. Nowhere near as bad as some of their coughs/colds/ear infections/stomach bugs.

redadmiral · 04/05/2008 09:30

Surely the vaccination must work in some cases or it would be ridiculous.

I would imagine even if they did catch it there's a good chance it will be milder.

LaComtesse · 04/05/2008 09:54

My dd has had cp twice within 4 years and the second time I caught it from her (I wound up on ABs since my mine was much worse than dd's) - I missed it as a child. YANBU to be upset but it's a hard infection to avoid.

LaComtesse · 04/05/2008 09:57

Btw, the first time dd had cp my parents took her on holiday with them (out of season) - they kept her away from other children as much as possible but she was going to be ill whether she was at home or not. She ran around in a swimming costume most of the week quite happily. The second time wasn't so pleasant for either of us .
