to think my numpty neighbours should ring their own door bells?

I live in a smallish block of flats, with our front room window right next to the main security door. The flat only has three windows in the place, and they are all forward facing, so to get some kind of fresh air in the place (which btw is riddled with damp but that is another story, a story the housing association do not want to hear ) I have to have all three windows open.

It really annoys me that my neighbours will ring the buzzer for me to open the main door (I think they just guess a number and hope for the best) and because the window is open, they can tell which buzzer they are ringing on. If I ignore them, they cheekily knock on my front room window and holler at me to let them in. In some cases where I have ignored them, I have had people come to the window, stick their hands in and move the curtains to shout at me to let them in.

I tend to wander off to let them in, muttering expletives under my breath and then get shouted out by these numptys that I should let them in and be nice about it. Erm.. what about using your keys, just for argument's sake?

ring their buzzers when you go out

AMumInScotland · 02/05/2008 12:35

I'd be tempted to just shout "Bugger off!" -you're not being paid to be their doorkeeper!

Ripeberry · 02/05/2008 14:36

What is the point of having a security system then? And if they can get their hand in aren't you worried about burglars or nutters climbing in?

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 02/05/2008 14:46

anwser the door once and tell them in no uncertain terms that until you are paid as a doorman you will not be doing it again and if they don't have their keys it is their problem!

oh and you wouln't recomend putting your hand though the window, as fido is remarkably agile and does have a tendancy to bite!

I had this very same argument with my old neighbours as, after several weekends of her daughter ringing our buzzer at all hours (her daughter is only 15 btw) I had had enough and answered the buzzer and told her to try buzzing her mother's door. Her mother cornered me at the bottom of the close and started hollering obsenities whilst I was bumping my daughter in her buggy down the stairs....she had a cheek to say to me "anything could have happened to her since you didnt let her in" ....at 15 I dont think her 15 y/o daughter should be out wandering the streets at 11.00pm anyway and why is she not home at that time as her mother!!! SOME PEOPLE have no shame!

TiggerTonkerTruck · 02/05/2008 14:56

Put a note by the buzzers telling them that you will not be letting anyone in.

Then a buy a massive dog so the next time the cheeky sods poke their heads through your window that get a blardy shock

TiggerTonkerTruck · 02/05/2008 14:57

I meant 'they'
Got a bit excited

girlfrommars · 02/05/2008 15:03

Could you close the window and buy something like this?

It'd probably have a much greater effect than an open window.

Alambil · 02/05/2008 15:06

get a wooden spoon and smack them with it every time they stick their hand in!

bran · 02/05/2008 15:10

Could you yell back "I am having a crap" (in the style of Waynetta Slob)?

nametaken · 02/05/2008 15:50

get your own back by setting your alarm clock for 4am every morning for a fortnight and ringing their buzzers

sfxmum · 02/05/2008 15:55

some idiot former neighbour used to knock on our door at all hours asking for our key to open her flat door

stoned out of her head

DirtySexyMummy · 02/05/2008 16:04

ffs let them in! My goodness.. grumpy neighbours or what!

I wouldn't like to live in a block with people that got this bothered about such a little thing. Surely you just have to buzz them in, not actually go and physically open the door for them?

Why do the people in your block forget there keys so often anyway?

nametaken · 02/05/2008 16:06

yeah it is only a small thing to let them in but you still have to stop what your doing and go to the buzzer and let them in. People should go about their daily business without inconveniencing anyone else after all, it's only polite.

OTOH, it's not really that big a deal I agree.

bran · 02/05/2008 16:46

I think it's a big deal if it's persistant, what if the OP is in the middle of something messy like chopping up chicken, or having a shower?

2GIRLS · 02/05/2008 22:29

I'd be more worried about people sticking their head in the window and moving your curtains!!!

Aren't you worried that one day you'll be peeling the spuds in the kitchen and there'll be some nutter standing behind you after climbing in through the window?

Anyway, have you asked them why they don't open the door with their key?
They would have to get their keys out to open their front door so whats's the problem?

The next time someone buzzes don't open the door. You'll have to hide somewhere because they just stick their head in the window anyway , come out of hiding 10 minutes later and say Oh sorry I was in the shower/toilet. Do that every time, they will soon learn that to buzz you does not mean the door will open.
