Are we supposed to be surprised? It might be helpful if they decided when they were going to start. Ok for me, shopping online, but who's going to go out on Christmas eve & then again on Boxing day? Make your minds up, retailers..

On that subject, have you got anything decent in the sales? I thought they were the worst ever.

I would bother with the sales if the items weren't so expensive in the first place. I would expect the sale price to be the normal price and the discounted price to be less in many instances.

UndermyShoeJoe · 27/12/2024 18:32

I’ve not gone out into the sales. Far too busy for often not a great deal. Example Lego. Argos sale £40. Amazon sale £36. Why would I leave the house.

if your talking B&m Homebargains Poundland tat for next year then frankly it doesn’t matter the sake price I wasn’t buying it anyway so I’m saving nothing if I buy it.

All the 'january sales' used to start on boxing day & it was a major event. I mean, remember people used to queue up for the Next sale at 5am! Now though, there's no hype around it. It's not a novelty for anyone anymore. There's black Friday that essentially lasts the whole month of November, then there's other sales starting before Christmas. It's just constant consumerism & I just find it quite boring now. It's a shame really.

The real deals come mid to late January, though they are generally the stuff/sizes/colours that weren't popular but can be some genuine deals.

It's the first time ever I've got no interest in the sales. I got some kids pjs for next Christmas online on Christmas eve. Any spare cash I have goes on heating my house. Less money to spare and year long sales don't help. I wanted some new pillows but as it was only 20% off so £4 I rather go when it's quite

There are no real bargains to be had any more in the major stores - it's all just dynamic pricing dressed up as 'sales'. It's barely three weeks since 'Black Friday' finished its epic six-week 'sale'. You can get bargains in independent places - our local garden centre had 50% off all Christmas stock - but, Currys, say, just knock the £30 off a £500 TV that they put back on again after 'Black Friday'.

I haven't bought anything in the sales for years, except for last year when I managed to get some half price straighteners from Boots. I didn't go in to buy them though - just happened to spot them at the checkout.

Mespher · 27/12/2024 18:53

Everything has gone up so much that the sale price is higher than the actual price just a few years ago, today I looked at some 'sale' knitwear in WhiteStuff which was about 50 or 60 quid,

Tooty78 · 27/12/2024 18:58

Yesterday someone posted on FB the queue outside Selfridges in the Trafford centre, it looked like it stretched for a mile! No way would I suffer that, as a pp mentioned the prices are dropped by only a couple of pounds.

I did order a pair of curtains from Dunelm which I would have paid full price for, I was delighted to find that they were in their sale!

We have a really nice independent gift/card shop in our village, and they always reduce their individual Christmas cards by 50%, so I stocked up for next year. It's the only sale I will make an effort for, no crowds and no travelling!

ExtraOnions · 27/12/2024 19:01

I read a post yesterday, 3 hours queuing at Lush to buy some half price bath bombs.

I can’t think of anything that would tempt to to spend 3 hours of my Boxing Day, queuing in a shopping centre.

I also think retail staff should get a day off…

Greyrockin · 27/12/2024 19:16

I did go to M&S today ready for the 8am opening time. I've lost quite a bit of weight and needed smaller jeans and undies (down from size 16-18 to a 12 - thank you Mounjaro!). I was expecting it to be mobbed but it was fairly quiet and I managed to find what I wanted. If I didn't need new clothes though I wouldn't have bothered. I was back home by 10am.

The January sales used to start 2nd January.
People used to camp overnight outside Harrods etc and then fight over the bargains which were displayed in their windows over the bank holiday to tempt shoppers. The New Year sales were advertised on tv all over the Xmas weekend. Whilst it was older stock that needed to moved on, shoppers felt they were getting a bargain.
