I made the mistake of approving the download of some Audio Codec to my Vista laptop and now have "no audio driver". No sound whatsoever.

What do I do now?

can you go into programs, accessories, system tools, system restore and choose a date a few days ago to restore your settings?

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 02/05/2008 11:30

Check you have not got a manual volume control as on my old laptop I did have and when I lost the sound once I gave the laptop to a mate to look at and after 30 mins he discovered the volume dial on the side!
Was I embarassed!

I did system restore but it didn't work properly and I still have no audio. (I got a message saying system restore failed and I had no audio so I don't think it's a volume button problem )

Any other ideas?

No idea, but at least it didn't fry your hard drive - I installed some service pack or other a while back and lost everything. Try going to the microsoft site and contacting their tech dept, or google what has happened - it might be a common problem.

CoteDAzur · 02/05/2008 17:25

I Googled it. Then went to Sony website and downloaded the original audio driver. It says "sorry, this driver is for Vista". Err, so is my laptop.

Try system restore again, to an earlier date. Sometimes it takes a couple of goes.

Roll back the driver. If you don't know how to roll back a driver...

Right click on my computer and select manage. Under device manager select your soundcard and right click selecting properties again. On the driver tab click roll back. This should restore your orginal driver.

Good luck.

Roll back was one of the first things I tried but didn't work. Somehow the audio codec Windows automatically installed this morning (as an update) erased the Sigma Tel driver on my laptop.

Anyway, solved it just now by going to C:/Update and double-clicking the audio update download, which made it reinstall itself.

Thank you all
