To be confused by a fast consultant app

Due to left sided pelvic/hip/lower back pain, and spotting inbetween periods midcycle/luteal phase, I was referred for an ultrasound scan. The results were back the same day. Christmas day I received a follow-up app with a gyno endometriosis consultant for 2 weeks time (system generated I am sure). Today (4 days after scan) the result is already on my NHS app. It says borderline result. There is a 13mm intramural fibroid on the fundus of my uterus. From what I have read this is a really small one, relatively common, and not usually treated.

I am a bit confused why I have been put in for this consultant appt to discuss this result? Wouldn't they usually just send a letter or pass you back to your gp?

Forgot for mention I am also having a cervical etroption investigated. I had a colposcopy and hysteroscopy by an obstetrician/gyno consultent who took biopsies. Uterine biopsy was benign and womb looked normal. The consultant has sent me for a nother colposcopy because apparently she was being extra thorough. This is end of Jan, so I am assuming nothing sinister and that the biopsy of the red patch must have been okay.

Maybe they will remove it if it's causing you issues?

This is the thing though, when I read up on it, a fibroid this small wouldn't be noticeable. It just all seems a lot of fuss, and has been stressing me out over Christmas. I am so grateful they are being thorough, and that I am being seen quickly. I just think is this not a waste of consultant time, and a bit confused why it isn't my gp now dealing with it.

Who referred you for the scan?
Results go back to the requester and its their responsibility to interpret and discuss with you - so if it wasnt your GP, its not his/her job to discuss the result with you.
Your appointment may not be for the scan results?

He could be thinking of further investigations/ operation like laparoscopy and removing adhesions (as an example). You still have your symptoms. I wouldn't like it if consultants stopped too easily for fear of worrying us!

Lammveg · 27/12/2024 14:12

I'd just accept it for what it is. Not for you to decide if you need an appointment or not and like you say at least they're being thorough rather than the other way of fobbing you off.

I was referred initially in November under the 2ww pathway. GP said they were classic endometriosis symptoms, but also red flag symptoms so it was just the process. She referred me for the colposcopy/hysteroscopy, the abdominal USS, and a routine gyno app, this one is on a waiting list, and just a routine backup up. The result one has sort of been arranged by the hospital. I was consumed by it, because I don't know what they can really do at this point.

Thank you. Only that one small fibroid showed up. I read they don't do laparoscopys unless it is a last resort. I don't know if there are other tests before this that they can do. You are completely right. The whole thing just makes me feel like such a fraud, and like it isn't serious enough for all of this. The pelvic pain maybe does need further investigation, the fibroid was maybe only found by chance.

Thanks, yes that is right. I just don't want to get there to be told info I've already seen on my NHS record, then we will keep an eye in it, thank you very much bye.

There are things they'll only see with a laporoscopy so it might be a last resort but it's not extreme or excessive or something to worry about. Best of luck!
