To ask if we need to replace our car seat?

I got DD out the car seat to feed her and left it on the sofa. DH nonchalantly picked up the empty seat, lifted it to another part of the room and dropped it to the floor. Albeit not very far (maybe knee height) but I remember reading they shouldn’t be knocked in any way at all and if they get in a minor collision they need replacing. In the past week I’ve also accidentally walked into it, kneed the side of it as I was carrying it into the house cos it’s so bloody heavy.

Do we need to replace the seat? I don’t want to ask in the dreaded ERF Facebook group. It doesn’t look in any way impacted by the above and I’m trying to strike the balance between being safe and over cautious. DC is nearly 2 months and we are going to buy a seat that is fixed into the car soon anyway which should last years.

YABU - this is normal use and would not replace it

YANBU - yes needs replacing even after a short drop

Personally I wouldn't

WinterBones · 27/12/2024 12:11

Nope, not for those reasons.

Wickedclimber · 27/12/2024 12:11

No, that's a knock, not 'minor impact.'

It's fine.

I know the group you mean. You can be vilified and shamed for asking a question. There is a spin off group which seems a bit friendlier (but I haven’t posted). It’s called Bump to Booster.
….but I also probably wouldn’t replace due a fall from that height unless I saw visible damage or heard any rattling.

I wouldn't replace it. However, I would also remind your partner to not drop it onto the floor.

DreamW3aver · 27/12/2024 12:27

It wouldn't have occured to me that this was even a consideration, every day on here opens my eyes to all kinds of issues that I didn't know were a thing, thankfully my children emerged unscathed 😁

Thank you I’ll join this

It's fine. The kind of impact in a car accident would be much much worse than being dropped from knee height.

It's best not to throw them around if you can help it (!) but they are made to withstand massive crash forces, so they can cope with everyday life, like being tripped over. Of course if you ever notice any parts actually being bent/cracked etc then definitely speak to the manufacturer but I wouldn't worry about this.

MyLoftySwan · 28/12/2024 19:52

I wouldn't for just that. They get knocked about when you change the covers as some manufacturers like to fasten them in so flipping tight it's like a gym workout (Axkid I'm looking at you). They are designed for heavier impact than that.
