Flushable wipes are a lie

SprinklesandSparkles · 27/12/2024 10:29

'Flushable wet wipes are not flushable. They might decompose when exposed to the right conditions but end up blocking the communal drain in my garden on the way to those conditions.

Signs all over my local hospital saying not to flush them.

Never knowingly flushed them with my 2yo.

They should ban the word flushable from the packets, just bin them, it's not hard.

YES! Some dickhead person who lives near us must have been flushing them and they ended up blocking OUR drainage and costing me £200 to get unblocked. We don't even buy the wretched things let alone flush them.

doodleschnoodle · 27/12/2024 10:35

There were some that were flushable. They had a special symbol on them from the water boards and had to meet certain certifications. It was called Fine to Flush. However it's been withdrawn because of complaints that it muddies the water with having some flushable and others not v just saying no wipes at all.

news.sky.com/story/no-wet-wipes-should-be-flushed-down-the-loo-after-all-water-industry-says-13071454

A Water UK spokesperson said: "Following recent guidance from government, we are now focused on urging customers to dispose of wet wipes appropriately through the Bin the Wipe campaign."
It maintains there was no problem with the certification scheme, but admitted that the confusion meant consumers were still flushing all kinds of wipes down the toilet.

flushable wipe = loo roll only.

Pamosonic · 27/12/2024 10:39

I'm surprised they are still allowed to be sold in shops considering the articles you read about fatbergs etc blocking drains.

Nogaxeh · 27/12/2024 10:45

Given the expense and trouble that these cause I would:

  1. At least double the VAT rate on them.
  2. Ban them from describing themselves as flushable.

It's amazing what companies are allowed to get away with in the advertising for their products.

Sinkintotheswamp · 27/12/2024 10:46

Yanbu. I don't know how they are allowed to market them as flushable.

YellowDiamondsInTheSky · 27/12/2024 10:47

We used to buy them. The Andrex ones used to just say flushable but noticed they changed it recently to say no more than two at a time, which suggests they know they’re not great for flushing and can block drains.

Threeandahalf · 27/12/2024 10:48

Same as tampons which I'm sure were marketed as flushable when I was about 10

Hoardasurass · 27/12/2024 10:52

Ugg my neighbours used these and they block the pipes and cistern thingy in my garden regularly to the point where it needed jetting out every couple of months. It only stopped when they were handed a bill for £0000s by the local council (our landlord) after they investigated and found the culprit.
I really hate those things and after living with the consequences of them for years think they should be banned from sale.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/12/2024 10:54

My top tip - if you want a wet wipe for after a bowel movement - get yourself a tube of aloe vera gel from Superdrug, dab some on a few sheets of folded up loo roll for your final wipe. Works a treat and good for your bum!

For baby nappies - use lovely soft man size tissues, with baby lotion. This is what parents used before wipes, infact they often used washsable cloths (and I would go down this route and cloth nappies if I was becoming a parent again now).

If they are the pipes under the ground I was told the water company are responsible for unblocking them and the cost, as they are their property.

Poo
Puke
Pee
Paper (loo paper only).

These are the four P's that are flushable.

There endeth the lesson.

Not if the pipes are on your property.

Some people need them and use them responsibly by disposing of them carefully

Not if the pipes are on your property.

I've had mine unblocked by the water company, and they also refunded a private drain person I called out to unblock them.

Unbelievably sanitary towels used to be labelled as 'flushable' back in the 1970s! I'm past the stage of needing them now (thank goodness!) but I can't ever imagine flushing one down the toilet!

Gilgogirl · 29/10/2025 19:02

All I can picture in my mind is a bathroom waste basket filled with streaky flushable wipes and it makes me sick to my stomach. If it’s that messy you need a wash. I live on a slab, flushables don’t like slab piping so it just gets stuck. Gross.

There are countries like Greece where there are areas where the vast majority of toilets are not even OK with toilet paper being flushed! It all goes in a lidded bin which is emptied regularly. It's amazing what you can get used to when necessary.

HappyFrappy · 29/10/2025 19:19

That thing about the 4 P's - blood is OK to flush too right? Women aren't expected to somehow filter it out of their pee before flushing?

I know saying blood would mess up the alliteration, but half the population probably have to think about how they dispose of blood at some point in their lives - I just don't think the 4 P's works. And I don't mean that tampons or towels should be flushed, but blood, the contents of a moon up etc is OK to flush right?

Gilgogirl · 30/10/2025 03:09

Not somewhere I’d ever want to no matter the natural beauty about the location. Not for me

Gilgogirl · 30/10/2025 03:15

And I do love a camping trip on the beach but I need toilet facilities. Just my way of camping. You like it I think good on you.

PollyBell · 30/10/2025 04:35

Well people could actually engage their brains, do people need instructions on how to do eveything in life?

Know we know why there are so many signs around for people who cant think

Garamousalata · 30/10/2025 04:39

I never flush wipes of any sort.
