To not have to drink Prosecco like it's an “occasion”? (Lighthearted)

I like Prosecco. At home I might share a bottle with DH on a Friday night instead of a bottle of flat wine. It’s just wine, but fizzy.

But not to my parents. To them there is a whole production of getting out the flutes, popping the cork and evenly pouring the whole bottle out for everyone to have a glass. Which is fine for the first bottle - I get it is a celebration drink. But having to do that with every bottle??

On Christmas Day we had 7 adults, so a bottle gives you about half a normal glass each. I just wanted to drink my fizz in peace - as my drink of choice. But no. 3 bottles of shared out Prosecco later and mum was saying “ooh can’t we move on now I fancy a G&T, do we have to open another bottle?” Yes mum, have a G&T! But let me have a glass of fizz please?

anyone else?

Unless I’m in Italy, I won’t drink it. Poor man’s champagne. Tacky and one up from lemonade. Yes I’m a snob. Love cava though.

Nobody is forcing you to 🙄 It’s just made in a different region, doesn’t make you posh 🤣

How is this relevant OP’s question?

I don’t think Prosecco should have to be only a shared occasion drink. But if you’re round someone’s house and they’ve supplied the drinks, then I suppose you should abide by their preferences in the case of Prosecco because I expect they don’t want an opened bottled left over if that’s the only way they drink it. You might have consumed the lot, however!

Changingplace · 27/12/2024 08:53

That’s weird behaviour OP, I’m with you it’s just a drink of choice and doesn’t have to be shared out like a wedding toast every time, did everyone else even want it?

That’s helpful 🙄. YANBU, I like drinking sparkling wine as well, doesn’t need a whole production.

Why admit to being a snob? A snob is someone who mistakenly believes him or herself to be better than others for what others can see are entirely spurious reasons…

One really can tell the difference between the traditional and industrial processes

Enterthedragonqueen · 27/12/2024 08:56

Have you tried cremant?

BobbyBiscuits · 27/12/2024 08:58

I find it pretty sickly tbh. I couldn't drink more than a glass. I guess they're trying to make a fuss as they would maybe do with champagne, but on a lower budget. But they just want it to feel special. I'd just ignore them or join in probably. I personally would only drink it on special occasions, if champagne wasn't on the cards. Not on my budget anyway!

Romanswindowcleaner · 27/12/2024 08:58

Prosecco is foul. Champagne is my idea of a celebratory drink and I don’t get the thumping headache I do from Prosecco. If someone offers me a glass of “fizz” and it’s Prosecco…it’s graciously accepted and then handed off to DH at the first discrete opportunity.

BigDahliaFan · 27/12/2024 08:59

I quite like doing that with a bottle of fizz for the first bottle...I'd open it with a sword if I could get the hang of it.

But yes after that it should just be sloshed or dribbled out sparingly or drunk straight out the bottle....whatever is the norm for you.

I liked that in Venice they had it available to help yourself at breakfast and you could get half a carafe at lunch. And yes other, probably better, fizz is available...cremant.

Hahahahaha what a plonker you sound

Prosecco can be rank if you get the nasty stuff. There is some really nice stuff around.
Though I’ve genuinely never had nice Cava. So each to their own

much nicer imo

Createausername1970 · 27/12/2024 09:01

They probably view it as a champagne style drink and do what they think they ought to do.

Do you drink it casually when they come to yours?

Keroppi · 27/12/2024 09:01

Bollinger for life Grin Most cremants are lovely, too. And blanquette de limo
I agree OP, a great fanfare about every single bottle being opened would be cringe!

Much nicer than prosecco. And usually a reasonable price too.

AirborneElephant · 27/12/2024 09:03

If we’re going down that diversion my current favourite is a South African method Cap Classique. Champagne is just paying for the name.

Nextyearhopes · 27/12/2024 09:03

I agree with you. I often prefer it to wine and often buy myself the mini bottles (DH is more of a beer/red wine guy)

Ooh a sword - they’d love that!! You’d be very welcome for the next ceremonial fizz opening situation.

to be honest they do the same with cremant and champagne. Never cava though as they can be snobbish too!!!

I wasn’t expecting fizz recommendations but will happily take you up!! I’ll have a look - where do you find it?

BettyBardMacDonald · 27/12/2024 09:04

I like champagne and dislike still wine. Someone gave me a bottle stopper that actually keeps the fizz viable for days.

Agree that it's obnoxious to make a huge deal out of opening any sort of beverage.

BigDahliaFan · 27/12/2024 09:05

Cava is seen as more authentic than Prosecco, it's made in a more champagne method....

I'll get the sword down from the attic again and practice

Cremant is lovely, completely agree! We had it as the toast drink at our wedding 19 years ago (eek!)

One bottle between 7 is a stretch, but it's not "half a normal glass each". So yabu in that front.

PicaK · 27/12/2024 09:05

Going back to your point....
I agree - it sounds painful.
But they rarely drink it and don't view it as an everyday so it's kind of understandable.
I'll swop you my parents who won't even have a half full glass of the stuff at Xmas dinner to do cheers with - because they never have a drink with food, only a cup of tea after.
My irritation feels similar to yours!!
