To think kids shouldn't have their ipads on with sound on in a cafe bar?

I was in a cafe bar having a lovely chilled time and along came a family. The parents get out an iPad for the kid and she plays it with sound on. AIBU to think this is really rude?

YANBU

It is.
I leave if I notice before I order.

Yeo it's really rude. You'll get the usual lot along in a minute to say 'maybe the kid is ND.'

It still shouldn't infringe the comfort of others though. I find the sound of loud iPads really overstimulating and I can't focus on anything else. I'm also ND.

If the child can't be without the iPad, headphones are the way to go. If the child can't wear headphones, then no iPad or go to a more suitable place. It shouldn't be at the expense of paying customers.

Headphones are their for a reason and no there is no excuse anyone can come up with that makes it ok

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 27/12/2024 05:51

Yanbu, and there are no exceptions. It’s rude.

Headphones or on silent. Again, no exceptions.

Ezlo · 27/12/2024 05:54

They did eventually get headphones out but that was after quite some time of the noise of the iPad. Why they didn't get the headphones out at the start when the child demanded the iPad (they really did demand it!), I don't know.

I'm ND too and sometimes wonder if I'm oversensitive to noise. I find it so overwhelming when I can hear noise other than chatter. If people start playing their devices out loud and there's music on in the establishment, along with the chatter, I can't concentrate on any conversation going on on my table and I honestly could cry with the overstimulation. It's horrid.

Trying being stuck working a shift when it happens!
Just before Christmas I politely asked the parent if they could turn it down. She turned it up. It’s not big or clever to stoop to her level but I did make sure she heard me call her a shit parent. Perimenopause rocks.

Could be worse. I once sat jn front of a brat that was shouting and bawling (on a coach) calling his MOTHER a "cunt" and a "bitch"
Then she let him play his iPad full blast. 🙄
I turned round and said "get it turned down now" - I was already pissed that my kids had to listen to that foul mouthed creature.
Just no need for it at all.

Haha I used to work in a cafe.
We had this kid running round being a nuisance so I told the parent to get control of it or they would be leaving
The kid continued to be a pain, someone spilt a milkshake on it and then I hand then their food boxed up and said "leave now"
She was screeching "oh my little boy!" So I said "younwere told to get control of it, you failed, goodbye"
Manager just stood watching me smiling as he knew I had no tolerance fir it on a Saturday morning 🙃
