I heard some people with the cost of the taxi there and back - they got paid less than the cost of the taxis.
A couple of Next stores have made a loss too between Xmas and NY as the refunds were greater than the revenue from the sales' stuff.
I didn't drive at the time, and thankfully my brother started work nearby at 5.30am so he drove me there. A taxi would have cost me about £65. I can't speak for all management but the person who managed us was not very understanding or kind (e.g. I wasn't allowed a break to get my inhaler unless I could find somebody to cover my place on the floor, meaning by the time I got to the staff room up all the stairs, I couldn't breath), and didn't really care it we struggled to get in to work, as long as we turned up.
There's absolutely no need for retail staff to need to start work at that time on a bank holiday.
I stopped working there as soon as we hit January. I was only meant to have a Christmas job and they didn't notify me of their decision to keep me on. It didn't go down very well when I said "I've seen you have put me on the rota for next week and I won't be coming in".
Oh and my auntie needed to have an emergency operation, and when I asked for a day off to go to see her before Christmas, I was reduced to tears on the shop floor. Some customers put in a complaint about the way I was spoken to.
