Worried about my cough

I’ve been coughing a few days , with cold like symptoms - full of mucous.
When I lay down, particularly on my left side I can hear noises when I breathe out. Sometimes when sitting up , but never when standing and walking around.
I don’t feel particularly unwell in myself, just a bit fatigued. Partly because I can’t sleep for coughing/ hearing weird noises as I breathe out.

Does this sound like a chest infection or is it just mucous moving through? It’s just odd that it stops when I lay on my right side?

I’ve been doing steam inhalation too.

That could be a chest infection, but you can phone 111 for a second opinion. Wheezing and tiredness are a bit of a red flag, I'd want to get that looked at.

paradisecityx · 26/12/2024 21:50

This has been me for three weeks. I'm on my 2nd course of antibiotics and now steroids as it's turned into bronchitis. I am wheezy and rattly and when I lay down feel like I'm drowning and can't breath. So much crap coming off of my chest.
Try and get a doctors appt and get some antibiotics. Feel better soon xx

Dressedcrabs · 26/12/2024 21:54

@paradisecityx

I’ve only had it less than a week. Is it worth waiting a bit longer to contact a doctor? I don’t know what to do for the best. I doubt I’ll get in with anyone tomorrow as it’ll be the first day the GP is back open after the Christmas period. Then it’ll be the weekend again.

No don't wait, phone 111. If you need antibiotics they can get a prescription to you.

Dressedcrabs · 26/12/2024 22:04

Can they do that over the phone? Without listening to my chest I mean.

What colour your mucous? They probably will ask you that.

Pleasealexa · 26/12/2024 22:12

Do you have a temperature? Have you tried a cough mixture? You said your breathing is OK, if that's the case perhaps leave it a day or so as you get better on your own. Dr's aren't keen to prescribe antibiotics unless required.

Jingleballs2 · 26/12/2024 22:15

I've had crackly breathing before with a cough and it's gone away as normal, no infection.
Obviously keep an eye on it though

sloecat · 26/12/2024 22:16

Phone 111. You need to get checked out.

Dressedcrabs · 26/12/2024 22:25

No temperature. Had slight chills a few days ago but nothing now. Took my temp it’s normal.
I can breathe and have been for walks without it being a problem.
Cant really see the colour as I seem to swallow it down but I think it’s clear , when I did see some.

I’m just wondering why I can only hear noises when Laying down on my left side and in no other position.

I'd give it a few days too.
I was coughing like a drain 10 days or so ago and had been for a good week with rattles and gurgling. Then I started getting breathless after the coughing.

The Dr said it was a lower respiratory tract infection and prescribed antibiotics and steroids. The mucous was clear but I was feeling very unwell and very exhausted.

Blinky21 · 26/12/2024 22:43

I had this when I had viral bronchitis. I was referred for an x ray after the GP listened to my chest and heard the rattle. For me it sounded like popping candy in my upper chest when I lay down. X ray was clear but it took 12 weeks for it to go away on its own. I'd suggest getting it checked out to be on the safe side

Dressedcrabs · 26/12/2024 22:50

@Blinky21

That’s how I’d describe it too, popping candy

Just inhaled steam and the crackling noise has mostly disappeared. For now. Kind of feels like the sound is coming from my throat not chest. Or maybe upper chest.

Barney16 · 26/12/2024 23:09

Is it like a crackling? I had that and it was a chest infection. I needed antibiotics. Doctor said it was pretty usual for it to be just one side. I did feel poorly though, completely exhausted.

Dressedcrabs · 26/12/2024 23:14

I’m not sure where the crackling is coming from - I think it might be my throat and upper chest , rather than my lungs. I might give it a few more days then if no improvement contact docs.
Seems to improve with steam inhalation.
