Pro-life and special needs support

Does anyone know if the pro life organisations in the uk run any programs for families with children with special needs.?
They seem so passionate in their posters of children with Down’s syndrome (that’s the main special need they have on their posters/campaign).
Genuinely do they run any programs /assistance to families who have children with sn . I work with families who have adult children with sn and I’ve never come across them on a practical basis in terms of helping mothers/fathers of children with sn? I’d honestly like to know to engage with them on a practical front ?

Never come across it, and I've done lots of volunteering with SN kids over the years.

Funny because I'd hazard a guess that would probably have more of an indirect impact on abortion numbers than lots of the pro-life campaigns do. Same for creating schemes to help pregnant victims of domestic violence/rape get the support they need to see through a pregnancy and the following 18 years of raising an unplanned child. Both those would be fantastic ways to actively reduce abortion numbers without shaming anyone into anything.

The exact same , I’ve never come across them on the ground and I’ve done loads of volunteering in this area as well as in my job . Not once have I come across volunteers or any affiliated associations with pro-life organisations that help on a practical level at all with families of children with special needs.

Many moons ago when I was at school (90's) one of my friends mother used to volunteer for the charity Life which I think was a Catholic pro-life group. They did offer practical help then. No idea if they still do.

There is a Charity near me who say they are not pro choice or pro life they are pro you but they do counselling and post abortion counselling and give free baby equipment and clothes etc to mothers . They are a Christian organisation

@Writtenout it’s more actual practical help with parents of older kids with sn as impact is greater then and can affect work as childcare can be extremely difficult etc. The initial baby part is tiny tbh

Surely it would be highly inappropriate for a group with a single issue agenda to be providing support services like that. Services providing support should be free of political or religious ideology.

Alot of religious groups run support groups for 'the disabled' which are questionable. I've no direct experience of down syndrome but have DC with another disability/SEN & I wouldn't want any political or religious groups providing care or services.

Yes as far as I’m aware the charity I mentioned only support pregnant women and babies and toddlers. I’ve never seen any mention of any support for older children

I presume you are talking about Heidi Crowter’s campaign against people like her being able to be aborted up to birth?

Heidi after judgement

Heidi Crowter to take Down's syndrome case to European Court of Human Rights

The Court of Appeal has previously ruled against Heidi Crowter, saying the Abortion Act was lawful.

@SkiingonKaraSea actually not at all, I’ve never heard of that case . I’m not in the uk and the pro-life groups here specifically use pictures of babies with ds , they don’t put any pictures in their campaigns of adults with intellectual disabilities.
They aren’t necessarily religious @Serencwtch but a key part of their message here is support for both mother and baby , specifically after birth , I work with lots of voluntary organisations who help with parents of children with a wide range of sn and none of them are from pro life groups.

There is a local charity where I live which does. It might be worth posting this on r/Catholicism

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/12/2024 20:04

Unfortunately many pro-life groups are religiously driven and single minded in their mission, which is simply to eradicate abortion, because "God".

Once children are born they aren't useful to the cause any more.

I find the majority of them to be rank hypocrites and as far from Christian or genuinely charitable as it's possible to be.

Nowherehere1 · 26/12/2024 20:08

Thanks, I’m not talking about nappies a formula which many wonderful Christian and non Christian charities do.
I’m talking about practical support for those dealing with older children with sn, I work with 3 fantastic charities who do.
If your message is all about how you should support mother and baby especially if the mother feels she can’t cope with a child with sn then I’d hope/imagine they’d also have some practical help in their organisation, maybe they do , I don’t know.

I've just googled using the parameters you are asking about but cannot find one organisation that fits the bill. Disappointing but not surprising, sadly.
