Looking for some great woods to walk in and stay somewhere

I live in south east in the coast, don't want to travel more than two hours for a weekend away.

I'd like to stay in or close to the woods in a cabin or cottage, just me and my DH.

Any ideas where there are some nice woods for walking in. And or a nice cosy place to stay a bit off grid?

Thank you! I do think the Forest of Dean itself would be great, but don't want to go to a holiday park kind of set up.

FOD is also over three hours from me actually!

New Forest?

Try malting farm in Essex / Suffolk borders.

Do you actually mean "off grid" as in, you know, off grid? No electric or gas etc? Or do you just mean "quiet"?

H0TSUN · 26/12/2024 17:07

Okay quiet really!

New Forest?

I always think the New Forest shouldn't really be called the New Forwleat because there's not actually much Forest and more sort of moorland

Eridge, groombridge, that kind of area. Loads of woods and forest nearby, really nice walks, some very good pubs. I'm guessing there'll be an air BnB in the area, we always camp nearby so I've never checked. Technically Sussex so may well be an hour from you

GreetSneet · 26/12/2024 17:12

The above is in Hadlow Down, East Sussex. I've been to a wedding there. There is forest school there quite often ( lots of home ed kids) but it might fit the bill?

Do you think you missed some of it? There are also large areas with trees for cycling and walking. You can look up options here to decide where to stay: https://www.thenewforest.co.uk/blog/post/top-woodland-walks-in-the-new-forest/.

Other places like Friston Forest, Alice Holt Forest or Cucknell Wood are nice but smaller.

Top Woodland Walks in the New Forest

The days may be a little cold but don’t let that put you off taking a walk on the wild side in the New Forest. During winter, when the trees are stripped bare of their leaves, our forests have a haunting, almost magical air.

Forest originally meant a royal hunting ground. Forest as a synonym for woodland is a recent meaning. There is some woodland (much of it modern plantations) in the New Forest but as you say it is mostly heath.

Okay then...I'll continue to enjoy the woodland walks in peace.

The Wisp at Northblows fits your criteria

I genuinely can't tell if you're taking the piss or just haven't been there?
