Talkabtit101 · 26/12/2024 08:54

I live in a flat, 2nd floor. Theres a mouse in the house I thought I seen something yesterday but brushed it off. However was just on the toilet and it's brushed past my leg, I'm freaks out I have a 5 year old and server anxiety. It touched my leg my leg was bare I've scrubbed my leg like crazy and used a multi surface wipe but I've just passed out after hearing they carry so many diseases I want to leave my house and I can't get past control out as it's holidays

Do you own or rent? You need to contact your landlord if renting. Speak to the other residents in your building and try and see where they're coming in. Please don't panic about diseases - just clean all your surfaces with a good antibacterial cleaner and make sure they can't get into your food cupboards. You should be able to get hold of pest control tomorrow.

Talkabtit101 · 26/12/2024 15:10

It's rent, I've spoken to landlord and they've said it's not an emergency 😢

All of my clothes are in there aswell yesterday was a busy day. Do I need to throw these or simply hot wash them????

I can't lie I haven't been in my bathroom since this.

I've spoken to the others apart from the floor below, and no sign. However this doesn't make sense as I'm second floor not ground, so the mouse has came from somewhere. It was a little brown one.

You don’t need to throw anything except any food it may have climbed on. Don’t panic. It’s not nice but honestly not the end of the world either. Can you borrow a cat?

Plastictrees · 26/12/2024 15:14

Oh no, I had this once when I was renting. You should be able to contact the council who can come out and advise. You can also buy home made traps, which I did in the end out of sheer desperation, although I felt terrible about it.

In my case, it was just the one mouse! I lived in a top floor tenement flat at the time. I was terrified there would be others (everyone says there is never just the one mouse) but I went on to live there for another year with no more rodent related issues. I hope you get yours resolved soon!

Fairislesweater · 26/12/2024 15:14

Also if you’re terraced it could have come from next door - I lived in a Victorian flat above a shop years ago and we had them for a while. My cat dealt with the ones that made it into the flat (we have open floorboards with gaps)

LostittoBostik · 26/12/2024 15:15

The good news is that in a flat they have a lot of other options so it's easy to get rid of them.

Buy one of those plug in deterrents that makes a noise unheard by the human ear but freaks them out. Make sure your 5yo isn't dropping crumbs etc - you need to remove all access to food sources and hoover every day etc.

But they will go quickly as there are other flats in the block to focus on if you make yours less comfortable

stayathomer · 26/12/2024 15:17

You need to stop panicking- we’re in the country and mice are a normal part of winter months. Buy a live trap, put chocolate spread inside then keep an eye to see if the door is closed later, then run down the road and set it free. Honestly you’ll be fine x

Redwinedaze · 26/12/2024 15:19

You’ll be fine! Just get some humane traps.

Talkabtit101 · 26/12/2024 15:19

Sorry everyone I must sound like a bloody idiot, I've just had a terrible Xmas as everyone has been poorly then I called a private pest control company and they told me mice in the flat were deadly to humans! i have a young DD so out of sheer panic I quite literally passed out.

I did then speak to another pest control who said " they're talking bollocks " his words not mine.

I don't feel good about traps as I don't want to kill anything, just get them OUT my flat haha.

We have a sonic sound thing coming today and we are hoping to buy a cat too, which we was already considering anyway! we think it's came through via kitchen-bathroom.

We all camped in the living room the last 2 days too because of illness as I couldn't be more thankful 😂 however a shower today would've been nice. And doesn't help DH only fear is mice and rats!

We live in high rise apartments, 2nd floor out of 11 I find it hard to believe we're the only ones who have had an interaction, however we might've been the only ones up at 4am to notice it.

Clean up religiously after your 5 year old, make sure you don't leave crumbs anywhere e.g. tray of toaster, do your washing up and block and holes near pipes with wire wool.

Mice will come in when it's cold so you need to make sure they don't want to stay by making sure they have no food and a hostile environment e.g. smell of cat, traps.

stayathomer · 26/12/2024 15:26

Op live/ him and traps don’t kill them- they run in and eat the chocolate spread and the door shuts and you set them free far from your apartment x

Talkabtit101 · 26/12/2024 15:26

There is loads of chocolate been left out too because it's Xmas 😢 so I imagine I'm going to have to throw away quite a bit

They clearly like your flat at the moment.
Do you have any family or friends whose cat is happy to have a short holiday?

Plastictrees · 26/12/2024 15:29

I didn’t want to kill anything either but when it happened to me during lockdown and all nicer methods kept failing, and I noticed it scrambling around under my bed again at midnight… I felt all out of options!

Most people would be perturbed by this for sure, I live in Scotland and most people I know have had similar experiences at some point but it is stressful. Fingers crossed mousey finds your flat fruitless and does not return!

Not far from the apartment as they won’t survive in an unfamiliar environment. It’d be kinder to use a lethal trap.

stayathomer · 26/12/2024 16:04

MereDintofPandiculation

just far enough that they don’t come back!!

Talkabtit101 · 26/12/2024 17:06

We think the point of entry was bathroom where we originally seen it. We've just took everything out and we think we found a few mice droppings.

We've emptied it now and hoping for pest control tomorrow 🤞🏼

I did panic when seeing the droppings as it was on a face towel, but I wore washing up gloves as that's all I had at hand

Oakcupboard · 26/12/2024 17:17

I rescue wee mice and rats from my cat, I think they’re so cute, lol. If they are not in a feisty mood, where I might get bit, I can carry them in my hands to a safer place. I haven’t died yet - but make sure to wash my hands well. I’ve also used humane traps & release them. They like chocolate the best.

Talkabtit101 · 26/12/2024 17:21

Oh no just looked it up too and seen you shouldn't hoover up the mice droppings 😢

Today has just been awful

It’s okay OP the horror of this will fade in time! Can you get out of the flat, sometimes a change of scene really helps?

PrincessofWells · 26/12/2024 17:38

Op, they're small rodents, you need to get a grip . . . no offence intended.

Talkabtit101 · 26/12/2024 17:47

I got out the flat today with DD to go and visit my mum as I couldn't bare to be in here to be honest.

But now all of this is spiralling me again and I thought I was doing right by clearing the bathroom out, but I stupidly hoovered the floor and I'm now petrified because online just tells you about hantavirus.
