This season is about Jesus. Celebrating his birth and the amazing things he did for us. Not getting the latest gadgets and drinking games. Although all of that can be fun, did you take your children to church this year?? Teach your children about God

OP posts:
Agix · 26/12/2024 07:37

The season is about the Solstice. Jesus wasn't born anywhere near this date. Teach your children about Paganism.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/12/2024 07:37

Not in this house. Midwinter break here. No religion at all.

daisychain01 · 26/12/2024 07:38

Riiiiight...

Jennyathemall · 26/12/2024 07:38

Here we go.

fanaticalfairy · 26/12/2024 07:38

Jesus isn't the reason.

fanaticalfairy · 26/12/2024 07:39

My child does know about God, also knows about Hindu gods, and Norse gods and a little of the Greek gods.

She knows all the made up stories that some people think are real.

Sirzy · 26/12/2024 07:41

Christmas means different things to different families. For many people the Christian side is only a small or no part of it which is absolutely fine.

MinnieBalloon · 26/12/2024 07:42

This season is about whatever you want it to be about, and every complaint, no matter how small, is valid.

TTPDTS · 26/12/2024 07:42

I'm all about Jesus and going to church - but it's a personal choice, not something to be forced onto people because of the time of year!

Let the people who want giant piles of presents, drinking games etc enjoy that. Let the people who want to go to church enjoy that too!

Christmas has a different meaning to different people 🤷🏻‍♀️

Natsku · 26/12/2024 07:42

We celebrate Yule, ain't no Jesus in that.

DT’s went to an international school and as a result have friends from many different cultures and beliefs. They are aware if the different gods people worship.

However we’re atheists and don’t go to church. Christmas is about family, parties, good food and drinks and yes - presents.

JaninaDuszejko · 26/12/2024 07:54

This is a UK site and the UK is a secular country. Only 1% of the population goes to church each week, that's slightly fewer than go to the mosque each week. The vast majority of the population haven't attended a religious service except weddings or funerals for years.

A winter solstice celebration is common throughout the world, various religions have co-opted that, in the same way that historically new churches were built near yew trees. The true meaning of Christmas is feasting and partying.

ilovesooty · 26/12/2024 07:55

Perhaps people like the OP could develop some tolerance and open mindedness and teach their children about that.

People celebrate in their own way.

You dont have to teach children about paganism but about history

Saturnalia was the celebration at this time of year. And what did the Romans do for us etc etc

Dingdongmerrilyonsigh · 26/12/2024 08:00

Yep - we did church on Christmas Day and every Sunday as usual! There was a lot of talk about Jesus throughout the whole advent season.

And yesterday after Church there were many presents and food and wine!

Jesus is LOVE - what better way to show love than spending time with family, sharing lovely food, eating together?

it’s not one thing or the other!!!!! - yes we as Christian’s believe LOVE CAME DOWN AT CHRISTMAS but whether you believe Jesus was the son of God or not - if you read your Bible - you will see that Jesus was a man that taught about loving and caring for others.

I think that’s what most people are busy doing on Christmas Day - loving and caring be that with time, presents, food or wine!

Happy Christmas everyone!

ChrisS36 · 26/12/2024 08:01

Provide verified evidence of a single thing he did for us.

AhBiscuits · 26/12/2024 08:01

My children know about God and don't believe in him, same as us. Christmas has nothing to do with Jesus for many if us, even if that is where it started.

7ft1garysson · 26/12/2024 08:04

Religion only causes wars and hatred.

this winter holiday is for family time and relaxing, god doesn’t feature

TheaBrandt · 26/12/2024 08:06

Don’t know your history do you op? Christianity superimposed their festival over the existing midwinter festival

Jesus was a social agitator and challenge to the regime, thats all.

The idea that Jesus would have been some all hippy dippy loving this and that is ridiculous given he lived and was brought up during a context where violence and rigidity solved problems and was day to day functioning of society.

BadLad · 26/12/2024 08:09

Could anything kill the fun of Christmas more that being bored to tears in a church?

magicalmrmistoffelees · 26/12/2024 08:11

I don’t believe in God so no, we didn’t do any of the things in your OP. However we did have a wonderful day with family, celebrating being together.

Sheeparelooseagain · 26/12/2024 08:11

I think by starting this thread, you have forgotten the true meaning OP.

HooMoo · 26/12/2024 08:16

😆

Thepeopleversuswork · 26/12/2024 08:17

Christians appropriated a pre-existing Pagan festival. Which was mainly about eating, drinking and receiving gifts.

So no. I’m more than happy for Christians to celebrate Jesus if that is what it means to them. But they don’t get to tell the rest of us how to celebrate Yule.
